Babylon shows man needn't be nomad or communist before becoming peasant or citizen, as such cultures often exist simultaneously rather than sequentially. When first encountered, Egyptians lived in river-side villages, in small separate but cooperative communities along the Nile. These interdependent peoples were already considerably civilized with a sort of heraldry-decorative art for symbolic and social purposes, each sailing under its own ensign representing some bird or animal. This heraldry embodied two crucial elements: independence (individually chosen imagery expressing individuality) and interdependence (agreement between different bodies to recognize different images). This compromise of cooperation between free families or groups is humanity's most normal mode of life, particularly apparent where men own their land. The real romance of primitive times has been missed by those making prehistoric men seem like walking statues or as stiff as their most archaic art. They haven't imagined what it was like seeing familiar things as fresh-a man discovering fire like a child discovering fireworks, playing with the wheel like a boy with a wireless station. Jupiter's name essentially translates to "Our Father in heaven." Across vast regions like China, the simpler idea of the Great Father was never much complicated by rival cults. There's an immense implication behind all paganism-not exactly God's presence but His absence, though absence doesn't mean non-existence. It's positive as an empty chair. The prophet saw God from behind; an immeasurable presence had turned its back on the world. This idea was so large pagans carried it lightly, as we all carry the sky's load-felt as nothing because it bears down with annihilating force. In pagan literature, there's the presence of God's absence-felt in unfathomable sadness. We feel it in Golden Age legends and gods related to something else. Above all, we feel it when pagan literature speaks directly: Socrates bidding farewell, Marcus Aurelius's "dear city of God," or Virgil's cry "to this also God shall give an end." The pagan world built a Pantheon, admitting more gods from all cultures in what was later called syncretism. Though they saw this as enriching their religious life, it meant losing true religion. God was sacrificed to the Gods-they became too many for him. Polytheism was a pooling of religions, thought liberal and enlightened but losing the largest idea of all: the fatherhood making the world one.

When we move from mythology to superstition, there's a darkening shade. A desperate impulse drove men to darker powers for practical problems, with a perverse feeling that these powers "would really do things" with "no nonsense about them." The gods of mythology had good nonsense-like Jabberwocky-but consulting a demon felt like hiring a private detective: dirty work, but work that would be done. This darker impulse led men to deliberately set themselves to do the most disgusting things imaginable, believing extreme evil would extort attention from evil powers. This explains much cannibalism in the world-not primitive but artificial and artistic, a self-conscious diabolism practiced not from ignorance but precisely because practitioners knew it was wrong. Before Christendom, demons weren't in hiding but publicly enthroned as gods with enormous images in city temples. The highest civilizations-like the Aztecs and ancient empires of Mexico and Peru-were places where Satan's horns were exalted. Their priests worshipped gods demanding incessant human sacrifice with horrible torments. Their idols embodied that element of reversal Dante wrote of-deliberately made ugly (unlike Greek beauty), seeking power by working against nature. Running through black magic traditions is a mystical hatred of childhood. Hebrew prophets constantly protested against idolatry involving war upon children. The forces of evil especially threatening childhood appears in the medieval popularity of Child Martyr legends, like Chaucer's tale of little St. Hugh. These evil speculations centered around the eastern Mediterranean where nomads became world traders with a purple-dyed empire reaching Cornwall and Africa. Between the monotheism of Palestine and the virtues of Rome stood Tyre and Sidon-a practical civilization leaving little art or poetry but priding itself on efficiency. Their dealings with their god Moloch involved "delivering the goods"-a transaction concerning children that simultaneously provoked the fury of God's servant in Palestine and the guardians of household gods in Rome. The materialist theory of history confuses life's necessary conditions with its normal preoccupations. Man cannot live without food and drink, but suggesting these have motivated all his historical movements is absurd. A deeper truth exists: what's most present in man's mind isn't economics but existence itself-the world he sees each morning and his position in it. Men fight hardest feeling the foe is both old enemy and eternal stranger, whose atmosphere is alien and antagonistic. A religious war happens when two worlds meet-when two visions of the world collide, when two moral atmospheres encounter each other. This is what happened when Carthage, riding on the sea and trailing Asia's riddles and imperialism's dependencies, confronted Rome. Ancient Italian religion was a domestic polytheism-gods swarming about houses like flies, deities of roofs, gate-posts, doors and even drains. This religion of the home was homely, personifying nature as transformed by human forces-gods of corn rather than grass, of cattle rather than forest beasts.

God who had been circumference became center, infinitely small. The spiritual spiral works inwards instead of outwards, centripetal rather than centrifugal. Faith becomes a religion of little things. After Christ's birth, there could be no more slaves-individuals became important in ways instruments cannot be. This fraternal element connects to the shepherds, common men who found themselves talking with heaven's princes. These men of popular tradition had everywhere been mythology's makers, understanding that a landscape's soul is story and a story's soul is personality. From orient lands came crowned kings with the mystery of magicians-Melchior, Caspar, Balthazar-representing the world's wisdom that watched stars in Chaldea and sun in Persia. They sought not tales but truth, and their reward was completion of the incomplete. Buddha would have come from his impersonal paradise to worship a person; Confucius from ancestor-worship to worship a child. The new cosmos was larger than the old, including both what had been there and what had not. Christendom is larger than creation as creation had been before Christ. The Church contains what the world does not contain-every other system is narrow compared to this one. Christianity is universal while other philosophies are not. Yet alongside the shepherds and philosophers came a third element-the Enemy. Herod, ruling under Roman suzerainty but of eastern blood, felt stirring within him strange things, ordering a massacre of innocents. Behind him loomed the grey ghost of Moloch of the Carthaginians, awaiting his last tribute. The demons also feasted in their fashion at that first Christmas.

At intervals, a shadow of death passed across this endless life-it came when Christianity would have perished had it been perishable. Like a clock striking with no consequence, or a bell tolling for an execution eternally postponed, the Church withered everything perishable but continued on. This pattern repeated through history: the twelfth century's nominalism threatened a more fundamental skepticism than mere atheism, yet was answered by Aquinas and thousands of students flocking to scholastic philosophy. When Islam's shadow fell over the West and many secretly believed it would conquer Christendom, the response was the thunder of the Crusades and the Franciscans singing across Europe. The Albigensian heresy nearly ended Christendom with its pessimistic philosophy, yet Christianity rose again. The Renaissance brought chaos and wild negations, yet faith returned unexpectedly. Most clearly, we see this pattern in the decline that began with Voltaire. For two hundred years, society has lost its fundamental religion without abolishing its official religion. Yet the incredible has happened again-the Faith now has a better following among young men than old. When Ibsen spoke of the new generation knocking at the door, he never expected it would be the church door. At least five times-with Arianism, Albigensianism, Humanist skepticism, after Voltaire, and after Darwin-the Faith appeared to collapse completely. In each case, it was the opposing force that died. This reversal disturbed people because only a living thing can go against the stream. A dead dog can be carried by floodwaters, but only a live dog can swim upstream. Yet those who mock miss the fundamental truth: Christianity truly stands apart from all other religions in a way that can be collectively classified. The missionary may say this in the wrong spirit, but in the cold light of philosophy and history, he is intellectually right. The outer world to which he brings his creed really does share certain broad characteristics that distinguish it from Christianity. All real scholars acknowledge that in ancient Greco-Roman culture, religion was one thing and philosophy quite another. There was little effort to rationalize religious belief, and philosophers rarely pretended to truly believe in the gods. Neither priests nor philosophers imagined their concepts would cover the world. This same description perfectly fits non-Christian civilizations today, especially in the East. The Eastern religious landscape is not marked out in churches or moral domains as in the West, but exists in a more subtle, relative, secretive state of mind. The unchanging East reveals what Europe might have become without Christianity. In Asia, men remain entangled in their own mythology, drowned in their own metaphysics. Some have grown weary of wild fictions, others of wonderful truths, and a few diabolists have such hatred of heaven and earth they've sought refuge in hell. This is precisely the fall that our fathers felt at the first moment of Roman decline. Had the Church not entered the world, Europe would likely resemble Asia now. The unchanging East remains so precisely because it never experienced the great change. Late paganism showed signs of becoming equally changeless-not that new schools wouldn't arise, or that there couldn't be mystics, social codes, or good men. But the tone and proportion of all these things would remain what they are in the changeless East, without anything resembling the challenge and revolution of the Faith. What the Church brought into the world was hope. Both mythology and philosophy were fundamentally sad, lacking this hope even when they possessed faith or charity. Buddhism might be called a faith (though to us it seems more like doubt), and the Lord of Compassion might represent charity (though it seems a pessimistic pity). But these ancient cults never covered their territories with practical, pugnacious hope. In Christendom, hope has never been absent-sometimes errant or extravagant, but always evidencing people in better spirits. The debates about liberalizing theology will continue until people recognize that the dogmatic part is actually the most liberal part. If dogma seems incredible, it's because it's incredibly liberal. Take free-will-it's absurd to claim liberality while denying liberty. Man's power of choice represents a supernatural power of creation, making him a miracle in order to be a free man. The deity of dogmatists is far more liberal than the deity of rationalists. As monotheism turns to monism, it becomes despotism. The scientist's unknown God with impenetrable purpose and unalterable law resembles a Prussian autocrat moving mankind like machinery. But the God of miracles and answered prayers resembles a liberal prince receiving petitions and considering his people's cases. The Catholic who believes prayers make a difference lives like a free citizen in a constitutional commonwealth, while the monist lives like a slave under a sultan. We accept Christianity because it fits the lock, because it's like life. It doesn't imprison us in dreams of destiny or universal delusion but opens incredible heavens and makes earth credible. We are Christians not because we worship a key, but because we have passed a door and felt liberty blow over the land of the living.
