When comparing two subjective experiences, we face a fundamental problem: we can't have both simultaneously. At best, we're experiencing one while remembering the other. We reduce rich, multidimensional experiences to simple words like "happy" because storing complete experiential "films" would be impractical.

Research shows people make confident predictions about future reactions without recognizing their brains have performed this filling-in trick.

Humans, like pigeons, struggle to process absences. Pigeons can learn to peck at illuminated levers but never learn to peck at unilluminated ones. Similarly, humans easily notice the presence of features but struggle with their absence.
Our inability to think about absences causes significant errors in everyday reasoning. When judging if pigeons deliberately target pedestrians, we remember the hits but ignore the misses. Unlike scientists who consider both occurrences and non-occurrences when establishing causal relationships, ordinary people routinely search for, attend to, and remember what did happen while failing to consider what didn't.
Our inattention to absences significantly impacts how we imagine future events. When we imagine the future, we fail to consider both how much imagination fills in and how much it leaves out. We tend to treat the details we do imagine as certain to happen, and the details we don't imagine as certain not to happen.
Just as objects appear less detailed when they're far away in space, events appear less detailed when they're far away in time. While our brains understand that spatial distance causes visual smoothness, we fail to recognize that temporal distance causes conceptual smoothness. We imagine distant future events abstractly (focusing on "why") but near future events concretely (focusing on "how"). This explains why we eagerly commit to babysitting next month as "an act of love" but regret it when the detail-laden reality of "an act of lunch" arrives.

People consistently misremember their pasts by recalling they once thought, did, and said what they now think, do, and say.
If memory uses the filling-in trick, imagination IS the filling-in trick. We struggle to imagine futures different from today or to believe we'll think differently than we do now. Teenagers get tattoos believing "DEATH ROCKS" will always appeal; new mothers abandon careers thinking childcare will always satisfy; overstuffed diners vow never to eat again.
When we imagine objects like penguins, our brains activate the visual cortex-the same region used when actually seeing. Similarly, imagining sounds activates the auditory cortex. This clever evolutionary design allows us to "inspect" things that aren't physically present. The same process applies to emotions: when imagining future events, our brain's emotional centers respond to these simulations, giving us a "prefeel" of how we might actually feel.
While we can distinguish between real vision and mental imagery, we often confuse real feelings with "prefeelings." Studies show people mistakenly attribute current emotional states to imagined future scenarios. For instance, people surveyed on good-weather days reported higher life satisfaction than those on bad-weather days, unaware that actual weather was influencing their assessment.

Like volunteers who made different estimates of African UN nations when starting from different numbers, our present feelings serve as anchors that disproportionately influence our predictions of future feelings. For instance, house hunters often anchor their price expectations based on their current home's value, and job seekers anchor salary expectations on their current compensation, even when market conditions differ significantly.
People's aversion to pay cuts illustrates how our brains are extraordinarily sensitive to changes and differences rather than absolute magnitudes. Studies show that employees would rather receive a 3% raise during high inflation (effectively losing purchasing power) than a 2% pay cut during low inflation (maintaining purchasing power). We generally prefer increasing wages over time, even if the total earnings would be less, because our perception focuses on relative changes. This sensitivity applies not just to physical properties like weight or brightness, but also to subjective properties like value and worth, affecting everything from consumer purchases to investment decisions.
We fail to recognize that the comparisons we make when predicting future feelings often differ from those we'll make when experiencing them. This explains why buyers and sellers disagree on prices-sellers compare losing their possession to their current ownership (a painful loss), while buyers compare gaining it to their current state (a modest gain). Neither realizes their reference points will shift after the transaction. This same principle applies to major life decisions: college students often choose majors based on current interests without considering how their priorities might evolve, and homebuyers frequently overvalue features that seem important during house hunting but become less significant after moving in.
Presentism-judging the future through the lens of the present-is a fundamental problem for "futurians." Just as historians struggle not to judge the past by modern standards, we inevitably imagine tomorrow as a slightly twisted version of today, failing to recognize that our future selves won't see the world the way we see it now. This bias affects personal decisions like retirement planning, where people consistently underestimate both their changing needs and values, and societal predictions, where we tend to envision future technologies and social structures as mere extensions of current ones rather than transformative changes.

Despite conventional wisdom that traumas like death of loved ones or violent crimes must devastate us, research shows most people are surprisingly resilient. While bereaved people experience sadness, few develop chronic depression. Though more than half of Americans will experience trauma like rape, assault or natural disaster, only a small fraction develop post-traumatic pathology. In fact, many trauma survivors claim their lives were enhanced by their experiences.
We consistently overestimate how badly negative events will affect us and for how long. Able-bodied people underestimate disabled people's happiness, and healthy people imagine 83 states of illness would be "worse than death," yet those actually experiencing these conditions rarely commit suicide.
Our minds respond not to objective stimuli but to their subjective meanings. This distinguishes us from animals like rats and pigeons that respond directly to physical stimuli. People react to mental representations, not physical realities. The same physical stimulus can have different meanings in different contexts, as demonstrated by identical shapes being perceived as different letters depending on surrounding characters.
Most stimuli are ambiguous, capable of multiple interpretations, and we disambiguate them using several key factors. Context helps determine meaning (as with the word "bank" in sentences about boats versus robbers). Frequency matters too-a loan officer interprets "bank" financially because that's its most common usage in their experience.
Our experiences are far more ambiguous than simple shapes or words, offering countless possible interpretations that our minds naturally exploit to our advantage. When faced with an upcoming experience-like eating ice cream or kale-we frame it in ways that please us rather than displease us. Once something becomes "ours"-whether it's an appliance, job, college, horse or political candidate-we immediately view it more positively.
We possess a psychological immune system that, like its physical counterpart, must maintain a delicate balance-defending us from unhappiness without deluding us completely. We need both reality and illusion: stark reality would leave us too depressed to function, while complete illusion would leave us too deluded to navigate the world. Our rose-colored glasses aren't opaque but tinted just enough to motivate us while still allowing us to see clearly enough to function.

Learning from Experience and Others
While practice and coaching help us master most skills-from potty training to cooking-they often fail to improve our ability to predict what will make us happy. Despite having both firsthand experience and secondhand advice about happiness, we repeatedly make the same emotional forecasting errors, expecting the next car or promotion to make us happy when previous ones didn't.
This paradox stems largely from memory's sophisticated editing process. Rather than keeping complete transcripts of our experiences, memory clips and saves key elements, rewriting the story each time we recall it. This editing process, while generally effective, contains quirks that cause us to misrepresent the past and misimagine the future.
We tend to recall unusual or extraordinary experiences more easily than common ones, mistakenly concluding that rare events happen frequently. For example, most people remember being stuck in unusually slow grocery lines while forgetting the countless average-paced lines they've stood in.
Research shows we remember final moments more vividly than beginnings or middles, particularly with pleasure and pain experiences. In one study, volunteers preferred a longer ice-water immersion that ended slightly less painfully over a shorter one, despite experiencing more total pain. Similarly, people judged a life that was fabulous until death at 60 as better than one that was fabulous until 60 then merely satisfactory until death at 65-unless they compared the two side by side.
Our memories are reconstructions that rely heavily on theories, not just facts. When asked to recall how they felt when Dukakis won California in the 1988 election, many people "remember" feelings that couldn't have occurred since Bush actually won California. Our theories about gender, culture, and other factors similarly distort emotional memories.
While the future may be difficult to see, we must make decisions about which futures to pursue. The most obvious solution is to ask others who have already had the experiences we're contemplating. As social beings, we can capitalize on others' discoveries rather than figuring everything out ourselves.
Studies show that using other people's actual experiences as a guide (surrogation) produces far more accurate predictions than imagination. In one experiment, people who learned how someone else felt after receiving a prize and completing a boring task made more accurate predictions about their own future feelings than those who tried to imagine their reactions.
The surrogation method works because it bypasses imagination's three major shortcomings: it includes the features we would fail to imagine, it's not contaminated by our current feelings, and it accounts for psychological adaptation that occurs after events happen.
Despite surrogation's impressive accuracy in predicting our future feelings, we stubbornly reject this method. When offered a choice between seeing information about an experience (like a restaurant menu) or learning how a random person felt after the experience, people overwhelmingly choose the former-and make worse predictions as a result.
This happens because we don't see ourselves as average. Most people consider themselves above average in intelligence, driving ability, ethics, and nearly every positive trait. We don't just see ourselves as better-we see ourselves as fundamentally different from others.
The irony is that the information we need for accurate predictions is readily available-observing others' happiness in different circumstances-but we reject it because we see ourselves as unique entities with minds unlike any others. By dismissing the emotional experiences of others as irrelevant to our own future feelings, we ignore one of our most valuable forecasting tools.
