エウリピデス（紀元前484年頃–406年頃）は、古代ギリシアの悲劇詩人であり、『メディア』の著者です。アイスキュロス、ソポクレスと並び、古典期アテナイの三大悲劇詩人の一人に数えられます。アテナイに生まれたエウリピデスは、神話上の英雄を普通の人間として描き、複雑な女性キャラクターに重要な役割を与えることでギリシア悲劇に革命をもたらしました。こうした革新性は、復讐、裏切り、そしてジェンダー・ロール（性役割）を掘り下げた『メディア』を、深く共鳴を呼ぶ作品へと昇華させました。

アリストテレスは、人間の苦悩を妥協なく表現した彼を「最も悲劇的な詩人」と呼びました。彼の演劇における革新は、シェイクスピアからイプセンに至るまで、何世紀にもわたって劇文学に影響を与え続けてきました。彼が執筆した約90の劇作品のうち、19作品が現存しており、これはアイスキュロスとソポクレスの作品を合わせた数よりも多くなっています。その他の代表的な悲劇には、『バッコスの信女』、『ヒッポリュトス』、『アルケスティス』、『トロイアの女』などがあります。
