Church secured their alliance by promising Plymouth's protection if they abandoned Philip. Nompash pledged to help capture "Philip's head before Indian corn be ripe." Church brought unique maritime influences to Native warfare, using a buccaneer-style sword and sailor's terminology. His strategy of showing mercy to cooperative Indians proved highly effective-his small band consistently outperformed larger colonial forces in capturing Indians. By late July, Philip's followers were exhausted and starving. Church's mixed force of eighteen Englishmen and twenty-two Indians cornered a large group near Bridgewater. Through clever tactics, including a bluff by the Sakonnet warrior Matthias, they captured 173 Indians, though Philip himself escaped when a guard failed his duty. By August, the war was ending.
