Standing alone in the spotlight at Calabash, she faced a sea of darkness filled with hundreds of people. For her final poem, she addressed her father directly: "This is the first time I'm reading this poem with my father in the audience... I hope you hear me." She read a poem that spoke of his harshness, his "black machete," and ended with the plea "Father/Let me in." The audience cheered and wept when she finished.
