But this reasoning is flawed-not wanting anything isn't noble, especially when there are people suffering who need help. All human advancement has happened because someone wanted something better. The written word, schools, economy, wheel, roads, courts, and homes all exist because people wanted to create them.
None of us have entirely pure motives. Progress happens when what we want benefits both ourselves and others. Mixed motives fuel most accomplishments-like starting a business coaching company both to help small businesses and to overcome personal insecurities about growing up poor. These mixed motives created jobs, provided for a family, and helped other business owners.
Great accomplishments often spring from mixed motives-wanting financial independence, recognition, awards, or to prove something to yourself and others. These primal desires can fuel meaningful work that benefits many. The key is leveraging these desires for good, ensuring others benefit from what you build, and mitigating selfishness through generosity.
Wanting too many things muddles your story. Like movie editors who leave scenes on the cutting room floor, heroes must make choices about what they truly want to pursue. This often means painful compromises and unfulfilled desires-leaving fiction writing for business books, choosing between running for office or building a company.
A theme or "controlling idea" serves as a filter for your life choices. My theme is "paving a path for anybody who wants to experience a deep sense of meaning." Your theme may evolve-from getting the most out of life when young, to learning a craft, to leveraging experience for others' benefit. This controlling idea helps you decide what to pursue and what to leave behind.

Finally, manage your secondary tasks by writing them down without letting them demand immediate attention. Secondary tasks won't be mentioned in our eulogies, but documenting them prevents them from becoming mental distractions.

Despite this book's focus on becoming a hero, the most evolved role is actually that of the guide. We need experts in our lives-like Michelle, our newborn care specialist who intuitively understands babies, or Peter, the elderly arborist. We can only become guides after living as heroes on a mission, facing difficulties and learning from them. The truly competent person is "antifragile" as Nassim Taleb describes-growing stronger through disruption rather than being destroyed by it. While heroes in stories are often bumbling and fearful until the climactic scenes, guides have already walked the path and gained wisdom through their failures.
Guides possess four essential characteristics: experience (a meaningful backstory), wisdom (primarily gained through failure), empathy (caring for others beyond oneself), and sacrifice (giving up time, wisdom, and sometimes their lives for the hero's success). Guides are simply heroes who kept going-the ultimate aspiration for those who have accepted life's challenges and transformed through them.
Our stories have beginnings, middles, and ends-with moral weight that affects those around us. Consider Bruce Deel, who moved his family into Atlanta's most dangerous neighborhood, risking his life to help trafficking victims, gang members, and the vulnerable. When asked how he justified the risk with a family at home, Bruce explained that leaving a legacy of courage might cost his life, but would serve as an example of bold love.
While we can't control how others perceive us, we can give love, security, and examples to follow-inviting others to live meaningfully despite life's difficulties. Leaving victimhood behind is like "dropping a bag of rocks"-the freedom that comes from accepting our agency and living as heroes on a mission transforms not only our lives but the lives of those around us.
