During Craig's 1988 brain stem surgery, Susan waited with family and friends, reading her Bible but struggling with doubt despite her usual confidence. When Ben delivered what amounted to Craig's death sentence, explaining the tumor's location in the pons and the likelihood of paralysis or death, Susan trembled uncontrollably.
