Wilga Mia in Western Australia's Campbell Ranges remains one of the continent's most sacred ochre mines. Anthropologists visiting in 1985 with Warlpiri traditional owners had to request permission not only from the human custodians but from the sacred beings believed to inhabit its ancient chambers. "Don't be unpleasant to us," miners would pray before entering with torches and axes. Until the 1940s, this ochre was traded for spears with southern tribes and for shields and boomerangs with northern ones.
The arrival of white settlers with sheep in 1860 triggered the "ochre wars." Aboriginal travelers, uninterested in European concepts of land ownership but needing food for their journey, took sheep as "bush tucker." Settlers retaliated violently, leading to cycles of revenge. In November 1863, the conflict escalated to an ochre massacre near Beltana-a site Aboriginal people could still precisely identify a century later. Throughout the 1860s, violence continued until someone in the South Australian administration proposed an absurd solution: if they couldn't stop the Aboriginal men from seeking ochre, perhaps they could relocate the mine itself. Remarkably, in 1874, settlers attempted exactly this-but moved the wrong mine.
The Tiwi Islands, just twenty minutes by air from Darwin, operate as a separate cultural entity with their own language and governance. Their society divides everyone into four moieties: sun, stone, mullet fish, and pandanus palm. Each moiety corresponds to a symbolic ochre color-red for sun, black for stone, white for pandanus, and yellow for mullet. This transformation from brilliant white to black lead sulphide appears dramatically in the sacred caves of Dunhuang in western China. Once a bustling Silk Road hub in eighth-century Gansu province, Dunhuang was famous for its Mogao caves-painted shrines commissioned by merchants and pilgrims seeking divine favor.
Some caves contain puzzling images-figures with black bones and bellies but delicately painted robes, holy men with startlingly black faces, and oddly monochromatic frescos. These weren't artistic choices but chemical reactions. The originally pink flesh tones, created with lead white, had oxidized over 1,400 years when exposed to hydrogen sulphide-literally transforming flesh to blackened bone, art following life's inevitable decay.
Local folklore explains these pigments through a tragic tale. In eighth-century China, the widower Zhang and his teenage daughter-renowned artists-were commissioned by a fearsome warlord to paint a cave by Buddha's birthday. As the deadline approached, they faced disaster: all pigments in Dunhuang had been depleted. In a dream, the daughter encountered Guanyin who revealed a hidden well containing pure pigments. The next day, they found the monochrome landscape with the well. As they lowered the girl down by rope, the knot slipped. When her grieving father looked down, he saw only a magical spring gushing with the five essential pigments-black, red, green, blue and pure white-flowing where his daughter had sacrificed herself.

European fashion quickly embraced this deeper red called "grana" or "in grain." Shakespeare references it in Twelfth Night when Countess Olivia describes her portrait's rouge as "in grain"-a wordplay understood by Elizabethans as cutting-edge cosmetics. Venice became Europe's red trading hub, supplying both Middle Eastern markets and its own 11,654 prostitutes (compared to just 2,508 nuns in 1700). Meanwhile, Spain zealously guarded cochineal's secret origin, turning these insects into financial gold.
Nicolas Joseph Thierry de Menonville's daring mission to break Spain's cochineal monopoly concluded with his escape from Mexico. With thirty porters carrying his precious cargo, he bluffed his way past customs officers by openly displaying his botanical collection while hiding the valuable cochineal insects. After a grueling three-month journey to Haiti, he discovered some bugs had survived and established his own nopalerie in Santo Domingo. Despite being named Royal Botanist, de Menonville died disappointed around age thirty. His shipment to the King's garden was lost when the Postillon de Rochelle sank, and colleagues found him difficult and arrogant.

The city's violin-making tradition began in 1499 when Giovanni Leonardo da Martinengo, a Sephardic Jewish lute-maker expelled from Spain, arrived and later taught his craft to Andrea and Giovanni Antonio Amati. Andrea would create some of the first violins in the 1550s, and his grandson Niccolo would eventually teach Stradivari and Guarneri.
A letter in Stradivari's own hand at the city's museum mentions "varnishing of the large cracks, that the sun may not re-open them"-a tantalizing clue about his technique that suggests a soft, slow-drying varnish requiring sunshine exposure.
As a Jewish refugee fleeing Spain in the 1490s, Martinengo likely traveled through North Africa where he would have encountered safflower, an orange flower similar to marigold with dual properties-yielding yellow with alkalis and crimson pink with acids. This versatile dye, nicknamed "bastard saffron" for being frequently substituted for more expensive saffron, had been used since Ancient Egyptian times for mummy wrappings and ceremonial ointments.
In Mediterranean bazaars, Martinengo would have found an intoxicating array of materials: dragon's blood (a brownish-red tree sap), oils (linseed, clove, aniseed, walnut, safflower), gums and resins (sandarac, gum arabic, benzoin, tragacanth) that could bind wood and create varnishes.
To create a lute with an egg-yolk translucent color, Martinengo would have purchased madder (Rubia tinctorum) roots, dried them in Mediterranean sunshine, and pounded them with mortar and pestle. The third pounding would yield the finest grade powder-the "krap" or "crop" from the heart of the root. Though modern artists associate madder with pink paint, when used with alum on wool, it produces vibrant orange-red hues like a redhead's hair.
In Cremona today, the orange-colored Stradivarius violin "Il Cremonese" captivates visitors with its tiger-like maple back that seems to dance with light. Made in 1715 when Stradivari was seventy-one, it returned to Cremona in 1961 after much wandering. In Hong Kong's Western District, I visited Man Luen Choon, a famous Chinese art supplier run by Li Chingwan. When Mr. Li demonstrated gamboge pigment by touching water to an unimpressive brown lump, it transformed into "a miraculous drop of the brightest yellow imaginable, almost fluorescent." The gamboge resin comes from the Garcinia hanburyi tree, collected through a method similar to rubber tapping but with a critical difference-after making a cut in the trunk and placing a bamboo beneath it, collectors don't return until the following year. During wartime in Southeast Asia, some gamboge shipments from Cambodia and Vietnam arrived at Winsor & Newton's factory containing exploded bullets-remnants of war in the garcinia groves.
Saffron, the world's most expensive spice, presents numerous paradoxes: red yet yellow, costly yet accessible, potentially harmful to the liver yet mood-enhancing. Celadon porcelain carried mythical powers across cultures. In Southeast Asia, the finest pieces were believed to house spirits-"talking jars" that could prophesy or even travel independently. Meanwhile, Central Asian and Islamic collectors prized celadon for its supposed "alexipharmic" properties-the ability to detect poison by breaking when toxic food was placed inside.
By the 1830s, green had become fashionable in European decor, exemplified by the "Mary Queen of Scots" rooms at Chatsworth House with their hand-painted Chinese wallpapers. But this fashion proved dangerous. Napoleon Bonaparte, who died in exile on St. Helena in 1821, was later found through hair analysis to have significant arsenic in his system. The mystery deepened when a sample of his wallpaper revealed Scheele's Green-a copper arsenite paint invented in 1775 that released toxic fumes when exposed to the damp conditions of St. Helena.

In Kabul, I discovered a city maintaining dark humor amid oppression-locals nicknamed a market "Titanic Bazaar" because they felt the whole city was sinking. On Chicken Street, once a bustling antique bazaar, I purchased lapis lazuli from desperate merchants selling their stock at any price. This stone, historically more valuable than gold, was once so precious that Renaissance artists like Michelangelo had to wait for patrons to provide it.
I yearned to reach the lapis lazuli mines, now on the opposition-controlled side of Afghanistan's front line. Instead, we visited Bamiyan, home to two giant Buddha sculptures with frescos said to contain the earliest recorded use of ultramarine. We traveled a dangerous day's journey from Kabul, past countless ruined tanks and unexploded ordnance, finally reaching the spectacular valley where the 55 and 35-meter high Buddhas stood guard. Though damaged by recent attacks, the larger Buddha still had visible ultramarine paint in its rainbow-circled aura-the first known use of lapis as pigment rather than just stone. Tragically, eleven months after our visit, the Taliban destroyed these ancient monuments completely.
Throughout my Afghan travels, I often recalled my childhood experience of blue light dancing through Chartres Cathedral. Though I'd romanticized this "Lost Blue Glass" as something mysterious whose recipe needed rediscovering, glass-makers later informed me that creating blue glass is relatively simple-just cobalt oxide in melted silicon. Yet there is truth to the myth: we cannot recreate medieval blue glass because the context of its creation is lost. While the workers who beat the indigo in vats seemed to enjoy their work-emerging blue-dyed and celebrating with laughter-the Bengali farmers suffered terribly under the system. They were forced to grow indigo instead of rice, facing beatings, imprisonment, and extortion from most British planters. This led to the "Blue Mutiny" in 1860, beginning in Barasat village near Calcutta, where farmers protested and were imprisoned by the hundreds.
A play called "Nil Darpan" (The Indigo Mirror) by postal worker Dinabandhu Mitra exposed the cruelty of planters like George Meares. I traveled to Tyre to discover how the famous purple dye was made. Staying at the aptly named Hotel Murex, I examined a shell of Murex trunculus-about the size of a triple-scoop ice cream with sharp spines. Tyre today is built upon layers of ruins-ancient and modern destruction blended together. Later excavations revealed an entire Roman town with a triumphal archway, necropolis, hippodrome, and most importantly for my quest, murex dye vats.
These vats, strategically placed on the windward edge of town to blow away the stench, were about the size of dining tables and deep enough for a man to stand waist-deep. Despite their historical importance, they seemed forgotten among fallen columns and weeds, separated from the "nice" parts of the archaeological site that tourists typically visit.
My search for true "Tyrian" purple led me unexpectedly back to England, where I met John Edmonds, a dyer who had experimented with ancient techniques. He introduced me to the fascinating story of tekhelet-the sacred blue used in Jewish prayer shawl tassels (tsitsit). For 1,300 years after the Muslim conquests, Jews had no proper blue for their tsitsit. The knowledge had been lost, likely because Jewish dyers kept the formula secret.
Ironically, this sacred Jewish blue comes from shellfish-among the least kosher of sources.
