Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan American novelist whose fiction explores war, exile, family, and moral responsibility, often through Afghan lives. He is best known for The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and And the Mountains Echoed. His books have sold millions worldwide, been widely translated, and brought global attention to Afghan experiences.

Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul in 1965, the son of an Afghan diplomat and a mother who taught Farsi and history. When his family moved to Paris in 1976, they expected the relocation to be temporary, but the communist coup in Afghanistan and the Soviet invasion made return impossible. The family was granted political asylum in the United States and settled in San Jose in September 1980. Hosseini finished high school there, earned a biology degree from Santa Clara University, received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and completed a residency at Cedars-Sinai before practicing internal medicine from 1996 to 2004. The major turning point came in March 2001, when he began writing The Kite Runner before dawn while still seeing patients, turning exile, memory, and childhood Afghanistan into fiction.
