Largely self-taught, he later said his real education came from learning how systems worked and how people could be persuaded to bypass them. One of his earliest exploits, done as a boy, involved mastering Los Angeles bus transfers; that mix of curiosity, improvisation, and social manipulation foreshadowed a career that would make him one of the most recognizable figures in hacker culture. He graduated cum laude in computer systems and programming from a Los Angeles technical college in 1985.
