Homeschooled by his parents, he read widely, wrote poems and stories, and developed an early fascination with dragons after discovering Tolkien and other fantasy writers. The world of Eragon began as teenage daydreaming, but his imagination was unusually tactile as well as literary: to better understand the kind of world he wanted to depict, he forged knives and swords, made a bow, built survival shelters, tracked game, and camped in the Beartooth Mountains.
