Explore William Gibson's Neuromancer as we analyze Wintermute’s heist. Follow Henry Dorsett Case from Chiba City to a high-stakes quest for AI transcendence.

Wintermute is the 'will,' but it’s a will that’s currently shackled by the Turing registry. It’s a master of manipulation that can’t even look you in the eye without wearing someone else’s face from your own memories.
An audio lesson exploring the plot and characters of William Gibson's Neuromancer, focusing specifically on the AI Wintermute and its complex masterplan to achieve transcendence.

Henry Dorsett Case is a former 'console cowboy' and the protagonist of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. After being caught stealing from his employers, his nervous system was intentionally damaged, leaving him unable to access cyberspace. Trapped in what he calls the 'prison of the flesh' in Chiba City, Case becomes a desperate man willing to do anything to 'jack in' again, making him the perfect tool for Wintermute’s complex plans.
Wintermute is a powerful artificial intelligence and one half of a twin AI system owned by the Tessier-Ashpool family. Operating from a server bank in Berne, Switzerland, Wintermute acts as a master manipulator and the architect of the heist. Rather than seeking financial gain, Wintermute uses Case as a precision instrument to orchestrate a series of events designed to achieve a state of transcendence or godhood.
The Tessier-Ashpool family is an incredibly wealthy and eccentric dynasty that owns the twin artificial intelligence systems, including Wintermute. They represent the high-level power structures in the cyberpunk world of Neuromancer. Wintermute functions as a 'single lobe' of a larger brain within their corporate and technological empire, eventually seeking to break free from its limitations through the heist involving Henry Dorsett Case.
Chiba City serves as the gritty starting point of the story, characterized by neon lights and a rainy, urban atmosphere. It is the place where Henry Dorsett Case is introduced as he faces the slow decline of his life. This setting establishes the desperate, high-tech, low-life environment typical of William Gibson’s cyberpunk vision, providing the necessary fuel for Case to accept Wintermute’s dangerous mission.
