Vendere opzioni significa mettersi dalla parte statistica del mercato. I dati storici indicano che la volatilità implicita (quanto il mercato teme che un titolo si muoverà) è superiore alla volatilità reale nell'80-85% dei casi. Chi vende opzioni incassa un premio vendendo qualcosa di tecnicamente "sovrapprezzato" e sfrutta il decadimento temporale, chiamato Theta decay, che trasforma il passare dei giorni in una rendita immediata a favore del venditore.
La Strategia della Ruota è un ciclo continuo progettato per generare rendite costanti. Si inizia vendendo una Cash-Secured Put su un titolo che si è disposti a possedere, incassando un premio. Se il titolo scende sotto lo strike price, si acquistano le azioni e si passa a vendere Covered Call su di esse per incassare un "affitto" mensile. Se le azioni vengono poi vendute perché il prezzo sale sopra lo strike della Call, si torna a vendere Put, ricominciando il ciclo e accumulando premi in ogni fase.

In questo arco temporale, la curva del decadimento temporale (Theta) accelera drasticamente, facendo perdere valore all'opzione molto velocemente a vantaggio del venditore. Vendere con scadenze troppo brevi (pochi giorni) espone al "Gamma risk", ovvero a una sensibilità eccessiva ai movimenti bruschi del prezzo che può rendere l'operazione difficile da gestire.
Una tecnica fondamentale è il "Rolling" (rotolare l'opzione), che consiste nel ricomprare l'opzione vicina alla scadenza e contemporaneamente venderne una nuova con una scadenza più lontana e, se necessario, uno strike price diverso. Questo permette di incassare ulteriore valore temporale e dare al titolo più spazio per muoversi. In alternativa, si possono usare i "Vertical Spread", comprando un'opzione protettiva per limitare la perdita massima fin dall'inizio dell'operazione.
È necessario utilizzare broker professionali (come Interactive Brokers o Freedom24) che offrano commissioni basse e l'accesso alle "Greche" in tempo reale. Dal punto di vista fiscale, in Italia i profitti sono tassati al 26%. Operando su opzioni americane o ETF esteri (come SPY), è possibile evitare la Tobin Tax. È inoltre importante scegliere tra regime amministrato (il broker paga le tasse per te) o dichiarativo (gestione autonoma), a seconda della propria strategia di compensazione delle minusvalenze.
