Explore why the freeze state makes leaving toxic relationships a survival fight. Learn how CPTSD, ADHD, and dorsal vagal shutdown impact the nervous system.

The 'impossible' feeling isn't a sign that you’re doing it wrong; it’s a sign that your nervous system is using 100% of its power just to keep you from a total collapse in an impossible architecture.
Why it feels impossible for a trans woman with CPTSD, ADHD, social anxiety, and severe GAD, working 3 jobs while navigating an unsupportive church and unstable living environment, to leave a 12-year toxic/abusive relationship despite annual attempts. Focus on the intersection of trauma (EMDR context), neurodivergence, and external stressors that create 'freeze' states or cycles of staying.

The freeze state, often referred to as a chronic dorsal vagal shutdown or collapse state, occurs when the nervous system decides that staying still is the safest option for survival. In the context of complex trauma and CPTSD, the brain is reshaped to prioritize immediate threat detection over long-term planning. This results in a 'stone legs' feeling where an individual logically knows they should leave a situation, but their body physically prevents them from moving to avoid falling into a perceived abyss.
Navigating the intersection of neurodivergence, such as ADHD and social anxiety, alongside CPTSD creates a total saturation of the nervous system. When an individual is managing these conditions while facing external pressures like multiple jobs, leaving a toxic relationship is no longer a simple matter of willpower. The nervous system becomes overwhelmed, making the act of leaving feel like an impossible survival fight rather than a lack of strength or personal failure.
Using the word 'willpower' can be insulting to those in a freeze state because their struggle is rooted in a physiological response rather than a lack of desire. In a dorsal vagal shutdown, the body chooses immobility as a survival mechanism because nowhere feels truly safe. Because the nervous system is stuck in this chronic state due to prolonged trauma, the logical certainty of needing to leave is overridden by the body's instinctual drive to stay still to avoid further danger.
