Horatio Nelson Jackson was a doctor from Vermont who made history in May 1903 at the San Francisco University Club. After hearing skeptics dismiss automobiles as mere novelties that were useless for long-distance travel, Jackson wagered fifty dollars that he could drive a car from San Francisco to New York City in under ninety days. This bold challenge marked the beginning of what would become America's first successful cross-country road trip.

When Horatio Nelson Jackson began his journey in 1903, the landscape of American travel was vastly different than it is today. There were no GPS systems, no paved highways, and very little certainty that a car could survive more than a few miles outside of city limits. Jackson set out to prove that automobiles were more than just toys for the rich, despite the lack of infrastructure and the common belief that such a feat was impossible.

While the original wager made at the San Francisco University Club was only for fifty dollars, the actual cost of the journey was significantly higher. Horatio Nelson Jackson ended up spending approximately eight thousand dollars of his own money to complete the drive from San Francisco to New York. His willingness to spend such a large sum to win a fifty-dollar bet highlights his determination to prove the practical utility of the automobile in early 20th-century America.
