When protocol demands war, one person's dissent can change everything. Explore how Vasili Arkhipov's courage in a 1962 submarine averted nuclear ruin.

The Decision That Saved the World

Miglior citazione da The Decision That Saved the World

    “

We think of history as a series of grand movements and inevitable forces, but the deeper you look, the more you realize it often hangs on a single person in a sweltering room making a choice that defies every protocol they were taught.

Arkhipov’s presence was a fluke of bureaucracy that created a unique safety mechanism. On most Soviet submarines at the time, launching a nuclear weapon required only two signatures: the captain and the political officer. However, because Arkhipov was the flotilla chief of staff, his specific staffing assignment meant a third signature was required for the B-59. When the captain and political officer were ready to fire during the heat of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Arkhipov used his veto power to demand they surface and contact Moscow instead.

In September 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a lieutenant colonel in the Soviet Air Defence Forces, saw a warning on his computer indicating that five American missiles were headed toward the USSR. Protocol dictated that he report this launch to leadership for retaliation. However, Petrov chose to trust his own judgment over the machine, reasoning that the Americans would send more than five missiles if they were starting a nuclear war. His decision to disobey orders and report a false alarm was correct; the system had actually been triggered by sunlight reflecting off clouds.

The "10-second pause" refers to a moment of silence where an individual decides to depart from a prepared script to act authentically. During his 1963 speech at the Lincoln Memorial, King was initially acting as a "lecturer," reading from a text that did not include his famous "I Have a Dream" refrain. After a brief pause and a prompt from singer Mahalia Jackson, King tossed his prepared notes and delivered the extemporaneous words that defined the civil rights movement, trusting his heart over his strategic advisors.

The concept of corporate personhood in the United States largely stems from a "headnote" or summary written by a court reporter named J.C. Bancroft Davis in the 1886 case Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad. The actual court opinion sidestepped the issue of whether corporations had 14th Amendment rights, but Davis—a former railroad executive—included a note stating that the Chief Justice believed they did. Over time, lawyers and judges began citing this footnote as if it were established law, eventually leading to major rulings like Citizens United.

The VOC created a structural "patch" to encourage investment in long-term trading voyages. By including a clause that allowed the transfer of shares through a bookkeeper, they invented the secondary market. This system also introduced limited liability, which acted as an accountability shield for investors. This allowed shareholders in Amsterdam to profit from the company's activities—including violent actions like the Banda massacre—without being held legally or personally accountable for the brutality used to secure trade goods.
