    According to James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, our results have significantly less to do with the specific goals we set and almost everything to do with the systems we follow. While society encourages being a 'goal-getter,' Clear argues that building consistent, purpose-led systems is the true key to success. Focusing on the process rather than just the finish line helps prevent the exhaustion associated with chasing arbitrary numbers or titles.

    External and introjected motivation are types of pressure that drive people to chase goals based on outside expectations. Introjected motivation specifically involves doing things to avoid feeling guilty or because you feel you 'should' meet a certain standard. These forms of motivation are often exhausting because they rely on external validation rather than personal purpose, leading to the burnout and emptiness described in the Achievement Paradox.

    Setting specific, actionable goals is often touted as the golden ticket to success, but it can lead to emptiness if those goals are driven by external factors. When you work yourself to the bone for a title or a bank account balance that doesn't mean anything to you personally, the achievement feels hollow. This happens because the focus was on the destination rather than building a system that aligns with your personal values and long-term purpose.
