Explore Situational Leadership to move beyond one-size-fits-all management. Learn how to adapt your style to meet team needs and avoid the trap of micromanagement.

Great leadership is actually a reaction to the person standing in front of you. If you treat everyone the same way, you’re going to be wrong at least half the time.
Situational Leadership

Situational Leadership is a durable management model that has been used for over 55 years because it focuses on the specific needs of the task and the team member. Rather than relying on a fixed personality trait, this approach treats leadership as a reaction to the person in front of you. It helps managers provide the right level of support or direction based on the specific moment and individual performance levels.
The model serves as an anti-micromanagement tool by teaching leaders to recognize when a team member, like a seasoned veteran, already knows their systems inside out. By matching your management style to the employee's experience, you avoid giving insulting step-by-step instructions to high performers. This ensures that you are not draining the motivation out of your best workers by trying to control every detail of their process.
Using a single management style for everyone often leads to being wrong at least half the time. If you treat every employee the same way, you risk either micromanaging experts or accidentally practicing 'abdication,' where you leave someone drowning because you failed to provide enough guidance. Situational Leadership moves beyond these extremes by focusing on what the team member needs from you in a specific moment to succeed.
