Purple was so rare in nature that when humans finally figured out how to manufacture it, the color became synonymous with the divine. It is a journey from the bottom of the ocean to the heights of the imperial throne.
the history of purple

The history of purple is deeply rooted in its rarity and the complex process of dye making. In antiquity, Tyrian purple was extracted from sea snails, a labor-intensive method that made the pigment incredibly expensive. Because only the wealthiest individuals and monarchs could afford it, the color became a permanent fixture in royal symbolism and ancient textiles, representing power and divine authority across various civilizations.
Tyrian purple was produced by harvesting mucus from predatory sea snails found in the Mediterranean. This ancient dye making history involves a chemical reaction where the secretions turn purple when exposed to sunlight and air. Because thousands of snails were required to produce just one gram of dye, the material remained a luxury good reserved for the elite, cementing its legacy as the original royal purple.
Purple is considered the color of royalty due to the historical cost and exclusivity of the pigment. During the Roman, Byzantine, and Persian empires, sumptuary laws often restricted the use of Tyrian purple to the imperial family. This color symbolism evolved over centuries, as the difficulty of obtaining the dye meant that wearing purple was a visual shorthand for immense wealth, high social status, and political sovereignty.
