Explore our place in the cosmos as we discuss Earth's role in the universe, the scale of the Milky Way, and the thin line between our atmosphere and outer space.

Everything we can actually see, all those stars and galaxies, represents less than five percent of what’s actually out there. You aren't just looking at the universe; you are the universe experiencing itself.
i want to learn about the universe

In the podcast Our Place in the Cosmos, the universe is defined as a massive, seamless entity that encompasses everything. This includes all of space, all matter, all energy, and even time itself. It is not just something distant 'out there'; it includes the ground beneath our feet, the air we breathe, and the very thoughts in our heads, making us active participants in the cosmos rather than just observers.
Many people view outer space as a distant destination, but it is actually much closer than we realize. The vacuum of the cosmos begins only about 62 miles above your head. To put this in perspective, if you could drive a car straight up, you would reach the edge of the atmosphere and the beginning of outer space in less than an hour, highlighting how thin the veil is between Earth and the rest of the universe.
While Earth feels like a unique and beautiful oasis, it is just one planet orbiting a single star. This star is only one among hundreds of billions of stars located within the Milky Way galaxy. Furthermore, the Milky Way itself is just one of billions of galaxies scattered throughout the vast cosmos. This perspective shifts our understanding of Earth from a central figure to a rare exception in an incredibly vast and hostile environment.
