What is the difference between the OSI and TCP/IP models in a practical hacking context?

The OSI model is a seven-layer theoretical framework used as a tactical map to identify specific attack surfaces, such as hunting for SQL injection at the Application layer (Layer 7) or ARP spoofing at the Data Link layer (Layer 2). In contrast, the TCP/IP model is the practical implementation used in the field, collapsing the seven layers into four: Network Access, Internet, Transport, and Application. While OSI helps in precisely communicating where a vulnerability lives to a client, TCP/IP is where the actual work of analyzing data packets and headers occurs.

How can an ethical hacker use TTL (Time To Live) values during reconnaissance?

TTL is a setting in a data packet header that dictates how many routers the packet can pass through before being discarded. Because different operating systems, such as Windows and Linux, use different default starting TTL values, an ethical hacker can use these numbers for OS fingerprinting. By observing the TTL of a returning packet, a professional can identify the target's operating system without having direct access to the machine.

Why is the TCP three-way handshake significant for both connectivity and security testing?

The three-way handshake (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK) is the formal ritual that establishes a reliable connection between a client and a server. For a pentester, this process is a diagnostic tool; for example, a SYN scan that never completes the handshake can identify open ports while remaining stealthy. Conversely, understanding this logic allows hackers to identify vulnerabilities like SYN flood attacks, which exhaust a server's resources by leaving thousands of handshakes unfinished.

What is the difference between passive and active reconnaissance?

Passive reconnaissance involves gathering intelligence through Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), such as WHOIS lookups, social media, and DNS footprinting, without ever directly interacting with the target's systems. This phase leaves no digital footprint and is used to build a profile of the target. Active reconnaissance involves direct interaction using tools like Nmap or Netcat to probe for live hosts and open ports. While active reconnaissance provides more detailed data, it carries the risk of triggering security alarms like Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS).

Why is subnetting considered a critical skill for maintaining the scope of a penetration test?

Subnetting allows a hacker to calculate the exact range of usable IP addresses within a network.
