Explore Heidelberg's history and German Romanticism. Trace Mark Twain's steps from the Hauptbahnhof to the Altstadt along the Neckar River and Odenwald Forest.

Heidelberg isn't just a destination—it’s an archetype, a place where the 'sublime past' dissolves into nature and every stone has a story to tell.
A walking history tour of Heidelberg, Germany, starting from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), moving through the Old Town (Altstadt), and concluding at Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss).

Heidelberg is considered the heart of German Romanticism, defined by its unique geography where the Neckar River emerges from the Odenwald Forest. This narrow sandstone gorge inspired 19th-century Romantic poets and thinkers who walked its crooked lanes. The city serves as a living bridge between the ancient and the modern, preserving a historic atmosphere that captures the essence of the Romantic movement and German history.
Mark Twain was deeply influenced by the city, devoting six full chapters to Heidelberg in his famous travelogue, A Tramp Abroad. Visitors today can trace the same routes he once explored, moving from the modern train station area toward the historic Altstadt. His writings highlight the enduring charm of the city's landscape, which continues to draw those interested in literature and German Romanticism.
The Heidelberg Altstadt, or Old Town, remains remarkably intact because the city was spared from destruction during the Allied bombings of 1944 and 1945. This accidental preservation allows the city to maintain its medieval feel and historic architecture. Walking from the modern Weststadt into the Altstadt covers centuries of developmental shifts, showcasing a student culture that has thrived since 1386 alongside a significant modern history.
