Mitochondrial DNA is like a tiny, indestructible digital recorder inside every one of your cells, recording every 'save point' of your maternal ancestors for tens of thousands of years. We are the descendants of the survivors, carrying a legacy of resilience that navigated the most extreme climate shifts in human history.
Haplogroup H: a human mitochondrial DNA haplogroup. Believed to have originated in West Asia, near present-day Syria.

Haplogroup H is a specific genetic signature often referred to as the Mother of Europe. It represents the most successful maternal lineage in the Western world, found in approximately forty percent of people with European descent. This lineage is tracked through mitochondrial DNA, which acts as an indestructible digital recorder passed from mothers to children, documenting tens of thousands of years of ancestral history across West Eurasia.
While it is the dominant maternal lineage in Europe today, Haplogroup H actually traces its origins back to the Near East. Genetic evidence suggests it began over twenty thousand years ago in a region near present-day Syria. Although it started in the Near East, the lineage eventually spread and became a massive genetic forest across the European continent, while remaining less frequent in its original homeland.
Haplogroup H is incredibly prevalent in West Eurasia, particularly among those of European ancestry where it reaches a forty percent frequency. Interestingly, in its original home regions like the Near East or the Caucasus, the frequency is currently lower, ranging between ten and thirty percent. This distribution highlights how a specific genetic seed can expand significantly when moving into new geographic territories over thousands of years.
