The Codex Borgia is a pre-Columbian manuscript from the 15th century, currently housed in the Vatican Library. It is a screenfold book made from fourteen strips of deerskin glued end-to-end to create an eleven-meter long strip. The codex represents a total solar eclipse as a moment of extreme cosmic crisis and battle. On Page 40, the Sun God, Tonatiuh, is shown being sacrificed by Venus gods, explaining the disappearance of light. This event is managed through the help of the "cihuateteo," the spirits of women who died in childbirth, who were regarded as warriors responsible for carrying the sun through the sky. The narrative uses these images to provide a ritual framework for ensuring the sun's return and the restoration of cosmic order.
The New Fire Ceremony is the grand finale of the codex’s narrative, symbolizing total cosmic renewal. Historically performed every 52 years, the ritual involved extinguishing all fires in the kingdom and lighting a single new one to prevent the end of the world. In the codex, the priest Smoke Eye is shown drilling a new fire into the chest of a fire serpent. This act represents the successful transition from darkness and sacrifice back into a fresh, holy cycle, serving as a manual for survival and rebirth.
