Research indicates that the average person spends nearly 47 percent of their day mind-wandering, which can lead to a sense of time acceleration. By shifting from mind-wandering to presence, you can stop the feeling of time flying by and instead experience a life that feels significantly richer and more meaningful.

    Mind-wandering acts as a form of time acceleration, making it feel as though hours or even years are vanishing. Scientists have confirmed that as we age and life novelty diminishes, our perception of time speeds up when we stop paying attention to our surroundings. When you are stuck in autopilot mode—rehearsing future conversations or replaying past mistakes—you are technically somewhere else, which causes the experience of life to feel like it is passing you by.

    Jon Kabat-Zinn, a leading figure in mindfulness, suggests that practicing presence is the most effective way to effectively live longer. While mindfulness might not literally add more years to your calendar, it expands your experience of life so significantly that your days feel more substantial. He compares the practice of presence to the difference between actually reading a book versus merely skimming it, allowing for a deeper connection to your daily existence.

    To stop living in autopilot mode, you must transition from a state of mind-wandering to the active experience of what is happening right now. This involves recognizing the psychological phenomenon where your mind drifts to the past or future and consciously bringing your attention back to the present. By adopting a mindfulness practice, you can counteract the digital void and the disorienting feeling of lost time, ultimately reclaiming nearly half of your waking life.
