Much like a waiter in a restaurant taking an order from a diner to the kitchen, an API takes your request and brings back the information you need. This process allows you to access complex data and services without needing to understand the underlying technical logistics of the software's internal workflow.
The comparison exists because APIs serve as the invisible figure taking your order in the digital world. When you use a laptop or phone, you are the diner and the digital world is the kitchen. You don't need to step into the kitchen to see how the food is prepared; you simply interact with the API to facilitate a complex exchange of information between your device and the backend systems.
APIs are the connective tissue of modern life that enable many common digital tasks. For instance, they allow a weather app to display the temperature in London while you are in New York. They also facilitate digital connectivity by allowing you to log into new shopping websites using your Facebook credentials, eliminating the need to create a new password by letting different software systems have a conversation.
