Jean Rhys (nata Ella Gwendolen Rees Williams, 1890–1979) è stata una romanziera modernista di origine caraibica e l'acclamata autrice di Il grande mare dei Sargassi, un pionieristico prequel femminista di Jane Eyre di Charlotte Brontë. Nata in Dominica da un medico gallese e madre creola bianca, Rhys attinse alla sua educazione coloniale e alle esperienze di sradicamento culturale per dare vita a narrazioni potenti che esplorano l'emarginazione femminile, l'isolamento e l'identità postcoloniale.

Dopo essersi trasferita in Inghilterra a sedici anni, Rhys entrò a far parte della scena letteraria bohémien europea, pubblicando Quartetto (1928), Viaggio nel buio (1934) e Buongiorno, mezzanotte (1939).

La sua opera scomparve in gran parte dalla vista del pubblico fino agli anni '60, quando Il grande mare dei Sargassi (1966) ottenne il plauso della critica, vincendo sia il W.H. Smith Literary Award che l'Heinemann Award nel 1967. Nota per la sua prosa essenziale ed economica e per l'esplorazione incrollabile delle vite delle donne nelle società patriarcali, Rhys fu nominata Commendatore dell'Ordine dell'Impero Britannico nel 1978 per i suoi contributi letterari.
