Nato nel 1990 in California, Colfer ha iniziato a ideare questo romanzo fantasy ispirato alle fiabe all'età di sette anni come fuga creativa durante la malattia della sorella, con sua nonna che fungeva da sua prima editor e incoraggiava le sue ambizioni narrative.

The Wishing Spell, pubblicato nel luglio 2012, ha lanciato la serie The Land of Stories—una saga fantasy per ragazzi in sei libri che segue i gemelli Alex e Conner Bailey nel loro viaggio attraverso un mondo magico di fiabe reinventate.
