As Sinclair Ferguson notes, "The form of godliness is not the same as its power." Pseudo-orthodoxy can masquerade under doctrinal precision while lacking an experience with the living God. Our culture celebrates doubt as courageous while viewing certainty with suspicion. Conversely, churches often condemn all questioning as rebellious. Both extremes miss the mark. Questions aren't neutral-they can spring from either faith seeking understanding or unbelief seeking justification. The church's harsh response to questioning can shut down honest seekers, communicating that doubts aren't welcome. Rather than condemning doubt, churches should expect questions to arise in our cultural context and commit to walking with sincere believers down the path of faith seeking understanding. When orthodoxy shuts down conversation, we betray our confidence in the Christian faith to respond to hard questions. The truth isn't afraid of hard questions; we're afraid of hard truths. As surveys show declining Christian identification and church membership, two common responses emerge. The "faithful few" approach sees decline as evidence of faithfulness. They believe the problem is always the world, making maintenance their mission and adopting a defensive posture. The "always adapting" approach blames the church itself, believing Christianity must update its beliefs to remain relevant. Both approaches miss something vital. What's needed is orthodoxy that's both unchanging and culturally adaptive. Faithfulness isn't simply retelling past victories or moving away from essential truths. It's standing on the shoulders of those before us to meet today's challenges with the timeless gospel. The adventure isn't in adapting orthodoxy but in applying it. We take received truths and articulate them afresh for new circumstances. Many Protestants embrace the phrase semper reformanda ("always reforming") to express the church's ongoing need for renewal. Reformation differs from adaptation-it's not revising the faith but returning to it, realigning ourselves with the gospel. Unlike the "faithful few" who believe preservation means leaving something untouched, true preservation requires continual renewal. To regain wonder and excitement at our spiritual treasure, we must return to childlike faith. Nothing robs a church of wonder faster than the absence of new converts. Those who've just crossed the threshold of faith see everything with new eyes, like spiritual infants taking in a strange new world-dependent, humble, and filled with awe. Jesus taught that we must become like little children to receive the kingdom. We grow out of childishness but into childlikeness. The beating heart of orthodoxy pulses through evangelism and missions-the more we share our faith, the more our own love for Christ grows.

Orthodoxy's Thrilling Future

The church's future belongs not to those tired of orthodoxy but to those whose roots run deep through church history and Scripture. Not to bandwagon-jumpers chasing fads, but to pilgrims empowered by the Spirit, thrilled by orthodoxy's discovery and definition. The future belongs to those who see past fashions, reject narrow-minded heresies, embrace the richness of inherited truth, and pass it to the next generation-those who want to scale the mountain, become more like Christ, and rely on the Spirit for salvation and sanctification. Earlier, I identified four ways we drift from truth: spiritual staleness that makes us vulnerable to seeking thrills outside Christian theology; pragmatism that creates a false dichotomy between deeds and creeds; settling for "unsettledness" about key Christian teachings; and pursuing earthly causes with such passion that Christ's cross gets edged from the center. These paths toward error are predictable and have been redeployed throughout history. Yet the paths toward orthodoxy are countless, as truth finds us through grace that hits like lightning-a supernatural force brought by the Spirit through the gospel. Orthodoxy and heresy aren't equal forces. One is real; the other fake. One gives life; the other leads to death. Orthodoxy is the wrecking ball of heresy. Yet ironically, heresy can serve truth. When errors arise, Christians return to Scripture and clarify beliefs together. Through this process, we deepen our understanding of God's creation, cherish the Bible Jesus read, grasp the miracle of incarnation, shine as a community of struggling believers, recognize our need for God's unconditional grace, sharpen our view of the Trinity, and find more glory in God's revelation. As disciples confront new challenges, our understanding of orthodoxy develops. We don't move away from the simplicity of Scripture but dig deeper to find treasures for today's battles. Orthodoxy remains unchanging in essence while expressions evolve to communicate eternal truth in changing times. It's not a straitjacket but a script allowing for necessary improvisation-wisdom that helps us continue obedience in the same way, but differently, as we rely on the Spirit's guidance. The church's future will culminate in a throng of saints gathered around God's throne in perfect praise, joining the endless song with angels and martyrs. In that eternal moment, we'll see our sufferings swept into God's tapestry, and all human errors will crumple before the Triune God's reality. Even now, in our Sunday gatherings, we get glimpses of this future as we join the eternal song. The thrill of orthodoxy isn't just about preserving the past-it's about participating in this glorious future that has already begun.
