We can contemplate infinite sequences, prove theorems about non-existent objects, and understand concepts that have no practical application to survival. Similarly, language enables us to understand the world in ways no other creature can, distinguishing truth from falsehood and living at nature's edge rather than immersed within it. Our linguistic abilities far exceed what would be needed for mere survival communication - we create poetry, metaphor, and abstract philosophical concepts.
Our altruism presents another challenge to pure evolutionary explanation. Unlike other species, human altruism isn't merely instinctive but involves complex moral judgment-recognizing that what harms another gives me reason to help, even when there's no benefit to genetic fitness. We routinely help strangers we'll never meet again, sacrifice our interests for abstract principles, and contemplate moral truths that transcend immediate survival value.
The paradox becomes clear: if evolution merely selected for reproductive success rather than truth, we'd have no reason to trust evolutionary theory itself. Sacred Encounters: Beyond the Ordinary World
Durkheim defined religion as a system of beliefs and practices related to sacred things-those "set apart and forbidden"-uniting adherents into a moral community. But this merely shifts the question to what makes things sacred. Sacred objects aren't simply forbidden; they possess an awe-inspiring otherworldliness, existing simultaneously within our world yet beyond it-passages between the immediate and transcendental.
Sacred objects, ceremonies, and places stand at the horizon of our world, looking both outward to the divine and inward to meet us face-to-face. Profanation occurs when treating sacred things as ordinary objects, while desecration deliberately reduces them to their degraded opposite. The Jewish experience of Temple desecration exemplifies this trauma-when sacred objects under divine protection are violated, it suggests divine abandonment.
Rene Girard observed that monotheistic religions, while promising peace, remain deeply implicated in violence. For Girard, however, religion isn't the cause of violence but its solution. He sees primeval society as defined by conflict arising from "mimetic desire"-rivals matching each other's acquisitions, creating cycles of revenge. The solution emerges through scapegoating: identifying an outsider who can absorb communal bloodlust without triggering further vengeance. By uniting against this victim, society purges its violence and achieves reconciliation.
Girard uniquely positions Jesus as the first scapegoat who understood the necessity of his death and forgave his killers-evidence of his divine nature. As the innocent victim who accepted death, Jesus discharged humanity's sins of envy and rivalry. Throughout, the cosmological and psychological paths to divinity intertwine as inner knowledge of self becomes outer knowledge of divine principles. Religion ultimately seeks the redeeming person to whom one can entrust one's life.
The concept of "person" evolved from the Latin persona (theatrical mask) through Roman law (right-bearing subject) to philosophy, where Boethius defined it as "an individual substance of a rational nature." Aquinas recognized this confers a different essence than mere biological species membership. Kant emphasized self-consciousness and the use of "I" rather than substantial unity, while Hegel described how persons achieve freedom and self-consciousness through relations with others.
First-person statements have epistemological privilege-when I say "I am in pain" or "I am thinking of Elizabeth," I cannot normally be mistaken. Unlike other indexical terms like "here" and "now," the first-person has special epistemic status. Yet science must drop the use of "I," creating what Nagel calls a puzzle: a complete scientific description of the world cannot tell me which object I am.
Persons are both objects and subjects. As objects, they exist in the spatiotemporal world, subject to physical laws. As subjects, they identify themselves in the first person and respond to "why" questions about their states, beliefs, and intentions. This dual nature creates two ways of approaching persons: explaining their behavior (as we do with objects) and understanding it. When we understand, we seek reasons rather than causes, interpreting the world as an object of personal responses.

Two Ways of Seeing: Cognitive Dualism Without Metaphysical Dualism
I propose a cognitive dualism where the world can be understood in two incommensurable ways: through science and through interpersonal understanding. Following Spinoza, who argued that reality is one thing seen in at least two distinct ways, and Kant, who distinguished between understanding (which sees causal connections) and practical reason (which sees free agency), I suggest these perspectives are complete yet incompatible.
The order of nature has explanatory priority-it's "ontologically prior"-yet the Lebenswelt (lifeworld) emerges from physical reality like a face emerges from pigments on canvas. This emergence relationship is nonsymmetrical. The Lebenswelt is irreducible, understood through concepts of agency and accountability that have no place in physical sciences, existing in what Sellars calls "the space of reasons" rather than "the space of law."
Neither first-person phenomenology nor intentionality justifies Cartesian dualism. The phrase "what it is like" doesn't denote publicly inaccessible qualities but summarizes experiential knowledge. First-person knowledge is knowledge on no basis, not knowledge of something unobservable to others. The mind is observable, but requires different concepts than those used by natural sciences.
Mental states are about things other than themselves, and this relation of "aboutness" seems to have no place in physical reality. I can think about nonexistent things or indeterminate objects, raising questions about how mental states fit into physical reality. When ascribing intentional states to dogs, we explain their behavior using concepts that classify objective features of their environment. The dog's beliefs are "de re"-identified by things we notice in the dog's environment using scientific concepts.
The I-You encounter is so vivid and central to our lives that we're tempted to believe it's an encounter between objects in some special dimension. This misconception, rather than mysteries of the "inner" life, prompts ontological dualism. I've argued instead for cognitive dualism without ontological dualism. The I-You encounter isn't between objects of any kind, but between subjects, understood through concepts where first-person awareness is built in.

Rights, Responsibilities, and the Covenant Order
The Jewish religious tradition regards God's relationship with his people as founded on a covenant-a binding agreement where God commands obedience while placing himself under obligations. This profound concept implies that our relation to God resembles the relations we create through promises and contracts-interactions between free beings who take responsibility.
Through the law of contract, humans have developed principles that seem inherent in promising itself, principles followed whenever disputes are settled before impartial judges. These natural principles exist everywhere, even in children's playgrounds where "law" is simply the collective enforcement of fair play.
From our disposition to bind ourselves in free agreements emerges what I call a "calculus of rights, responsibilities, and duties"-the ancient concept of natural law inscribed in human reason itself. Following Hohfeld's typology, we can distinguish claim rights from liberty rights. Claim rights arise from specific circumstances creating claims by one person against another bound to honor them, as in contracts or torts. Every claim right in one person defines a duty in another-a "directed duty" toward the claimant.
The modern tendency toward "rights inflation" has transformed freedom rights into claim rights through linguistic ambiguity. Consider how the "right to life" has shifted from meaning freedom from threats to one's life to implying entitlement to protection against anything life-threatening, including disease. This transformation creates problematic, non-specific claims against unspecified parties, inevitably pointing to the state as provider.
Rights talk serves to establish spheres of personal sovereignty where individual choice is law. This sovereignty enables us to freely undertake obligations and create the institutional facts that form our social world. Rights identify what belongs within "me and mine"-fixed points from which negotiation can proceed. Without these boundaries, consensual relations become impossible to maintain.
Beyond justice lie obligations that are bequeathed rather than created-bonds that transcend mere agreement. Affection, friendship, and love involve unconditional giving that might expect but doesn't demand reciprocity. Unlike the deontic powers created through agreement, these "transcendent" bonds lack clear temporal boundaries and possess an "eternal" character.

The Face as Threshold: Where Subjects Meet the World
Shakespeare's lines about faces mirroring each other reveal a profound truth about personal existence. Though people are objects in the world, we address them as subjects with unique perspectives. The mystery of personhood isn't solved through Cartesian dualism but through understanding the "real presence"-how a perspective that occupies no physical place can appear in the world of objects. The face provides this connection, belonging simultaneously to the objective world and to the subject.
The face has a unique repertoire of expressions that reveal subjectivity. Unlike animals, humans smile-not grimacing, but revealing the soul in an involuntary blessing between persons. Looking is most profound when lovers gaze into each other's eyes, seeking not anatomical features but the other's subjectivity. Sartre noted how another's gaze disturbs us as an intrusion from beyond the world's horizon. Blushes, like tears, cannot be willed-they're summoned by the other's gaze crossing our inner threshold, a recognition of mutual subjectivity.
The face symbolizes our individual personhood, displaying our unique selfhood that persists through bodily changes. Our sense of absolute individuality-our Istigkeit or haecceitas-translates into the face and becomes flesh. This explains the power of theatrical masks in Greek and Japanese traditions, where masks paradoxically reveal character by removing the impediment of human flesh, allowing emotions to shine through.
Though there's no non-trivial answer to what makes me the individual I am, the notion of absolute individuality arises naturally from interpersonal relations. Rather than dismiss it as illusion, it's a "well-founded phenomenon" in Leibniz's sense-indispensable to our way of seeing the world. The face matters because it's the threshold where the other appears as a partner in dialogue. Our interpersonal commitments-promises, responsibilities, vows-would be inconceivable without this assumption of persistent individuality, which we read in each other's faces.
Sexual desire is inherently individualizing-we desire the other as an embodied subject, not merely a body. The modern reduction of desire to mere pursuit of pleasurable sensations deprives sexual relations of moral meaning, making phenomena like the outrage of rape unintelligible.

Sacred Architecture: How We Dwell in the World
Our understanding of human nature often relies on myths of origins that contrast with scientific evolutionary explanations. These myths aren't mere fairy tales but attempts to make sense of the human condition by projecting human nature back to an imaginary beginning. Following Aristotle and Hegel, we can understand human beings as essentially persons, since personhood is our telos or end, just as an acorn's essence is understood through its development into an oak.
The history of settled peoples reveals our story-how we might dwell in places we've taken possession of. For ancient Greeks and Romans, the hearth represented the family's will to settle, housing household gods and gathering places for ritual acknowledgment of ancestors. Ancestor worship addressed the metaphysical need for proof that a place truly belongs to its inhabitants-the dead beneath the hearth confirm ownership exercised on behalf of both living and deceased.
Places become sacred in different ways. While Greeks and Romans believed temples made places holy through consecration, the Old Testament shows the reverse-patriarchs erected altars at sites already made holy through divine encounters. Sacred places appear universal across cultures: some house gods or spirits, others are haunted by ghosts of unresolved sorrows, while still others commemorate heroes or battles. The temple symbolizes our collective intention to dwell permanently, with architecture that both opens to the city while pointing beyond this world-stone brought alive to witness our presence, where God is both revealed and concealed.
The temple exists at the city's edge metaphysically, its architecture pointing beyond this world while remaining open to worldly transactions. Its witnessing stone comes alive through carving and light, creating a place where the faithful encounter God, who remains partially hidden. Temple architecture reflects this through its upright stance, generative forms emanating from the column's proportions, and spiritualizing features where stone bears the mark of shaping intention.
Architecture cannot be understood in purely secular terms-"our architecture derives from the temple, for the reason that the city derives from its god." Temple stone represents divine immortality and community permanence, protecting not just the living but the dead and unborn. Modern architecture, by contrast, represents our fall into seeing everything as objects to be used rather than subjects to be faced. This reflects our primordial temptation to "treat persons as things"-what religion calls original sin.

Music as Sacred Space: The Transcendent in Sound
The sacred emerges from the "overreaching intentionality" of our interpersonal states of mind. In encounters with others, we experience them as revelations that "haunt" their bodies rather than being simply visible. This intentionality extends into our search for meaning in everyday objects and places of pilgrimage, connecting to the cognitive dualism between scientific understanding (Welt) and lived experience (Lebenswelt).
In recent decades, Darwinism has invaded the humanities, replacing interpretation with explanation by framing aesthetic experiences as biological adaptations. This approach reduces art and music to their genetic benefits-singing mothers bonding with children or beauty serving as a peacock-tail-like advertisement of reproductive fitness. But these explanations are fundamentally flawed: they attempt to explain phenomena they haven't properly defined.
Music exists to be understood, not through neural pathways or acoustical relations, but through grasping its intrinsic order and meaning. Music is an appearance-not found in nature but perceived in experience. In musical space, we encounter gravitational forces, melodies with beginnings and ends, and tones (not merely pitched sounds). This musical movement occurs in a space unlike physical space-when we hear the opening of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, we perceive intentional movement with purpose.
Musical space defies ordinary understanding of movement. When a melody moves from C to E-flat, nothing physical travels between them-no musical ectoplasm crosses the void between semitones. Musical space has unique topological features: themes can return to starting points while moving constantly upward (like an Escher paradox), and asymmetrical chords cannot be transposed onto their mirror forms.
The difference between background music and attentive listening is the difference between preventing silence and letting silence speak. In listening culture, music arises from silence, using it as a painter uses canvas-silence becomes the prima materia from which music is composed. The most eloquent parts of classical sonata movements are often moments of silence, as in Beethoven's "Tempest" sonata.
Music offers pure aboutness without specific subject or object-"a movement of nothing in a space that is nowhere, with a purpose that is no-one's." It creates a pure sympathy between subjects without the encumbrance of an objective world, offering an icon of religious experience. "Absolute music" isn't about anything particular yet somehow contains all human life. Beethoven's C-sharp Minor Quartet possesses a soul addressing us with serious authority, inviting us into a higher world of fulfillment.

Seeking God Beyond the Veil of Nature
I've developed a conception of self-conscious subjects whose interpersonal responses present meanings transcending natural science. The "order of the covenant" emerges from the "order of nature" as objectively as a face emerges from flesh or movement from musical tones. This covenant remains invisible to non-self-conscious creatures. My argument introduces two fundamental thoughts: the I-You intentionality projects beyond natural boundaries, and in doing so uncovers our religious need.
The atheistic view that interpersonal bonds are merely adaptations is unacceptable. Human life faces constant disruption by experiences that can't be understood in contractual terms. These belong to "the order of creation" where coming-to-be and passing-away are ruling principles. Physics has no use for creation-in nature's order, objects merely change form without absolute loss or gain. Yet we constantly confront nothingness: the self, known only as subject, will someday be destroyed without remainder.
The moment of gift is illustrated by Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac. Unlike Aztec mass murder, Abraham gave up something deeply loved, recognizing his son was itself a gift from God. He crossed from the covenant's secure order into creation's troubled realm where rules are set aside, discovering the fundamental truth that being is a gift. Our rituals, liturgies and sanctuaries dramatize this truth-that what we have has been given to us.
The moment of forgiveness reveals that reconciliation comes only through self-sacrifice, as embodied in the Cross. The Eucharist commemorates God's supreme self-sacrifice, teaching the way of forgiveness. While the covenant demands honoring obligations, forgiveness comes as a gift earned through penitence and atonement-acts that can't be contractual terms but must themselves be given.
Communities depend on the covenant's order but cannot endure without sacrifice-people giving their lives in war, sacrificing comfort for children, and forgiving daily. Without letting creation's order shine through our deals, communities face extinction as sacrifice motives wane. Hence we need communal rituals making sacrifice present.
The cognitive dualism I've defended suggests approaching the world in two ways: explanation (seeking natural kinds and causal connections) and understanding (demanding reasons and meanings). Perhaps the sacred represents revelations of the subject-places where "why" questions can be asked and answered. God relates to the world in the "space of reasons" rather than causes, answering the "why" of existence.
Religion originated as death's remedy-by worshipping ancestors, we refuse their departure. Tombs' permanence emphasizes death's defeat, promising our own immortality. This promise continued as ancestor worship adapted to monotheism, weaving what Larkin called "that vast, moth-eaten, musical brocade created to pretend we never die."
Faith approaches hope when we choose to see death not as annihilation but transition. As Simone Weil suggests, willingly undergoing labor and death returns us to "the current of Supreme Good which is Obedience to God." The afterlife as temporal succession is absurd, belonging to nature's causal envelope. Salvation requires not eternal life but death's acceptance-meeting our creator to whom we must account. Through love and sacrifice, we become part of the eternal order, so death becomes redemption, uniting us with the world's soul.
