After analyzing politics through a cynical but accurate lens, we must confront the question of what can be done to improve governance. Making the world better is difficult-if it were easy, it would have happened already. Improving life for one group typically makes another worse off, particularly leaders who must initiate change. We should focus on achievable improvements rather than utopian perfection. When coalition size grows beyond a certain point, members begin to support further expansion rather than contraction. Using our example, once a coalition reaches about seven members, the essentials prefer adding more people because their losses in private rewards become outweighed by societal gains. This creates tension with leaders who want to keep coalitions small. The essentials offer the greatest prospect for both constructive and destructive change. They support democratization when they fear being dropped from the coalition. The Green Bay Packers demonstrate how institutional structure affects stakeholder satisfaction. As a nonprofit, community-owned franchise with 112,120 shareholders, the Packers maintain extraordinary fan loyalty with 98.9% attendance despite being in a small market. Their ownership rules prevent concentrated control-no one can own more than 200,000 of the 4.75 million shares. Comparing their 43-member board to HP's 12-member board reveals a dramatic difference in representation. This suggests corporations could better serve shareholders by expanding their effective coalitions. For democracies, life is good but can be better. Modern democracies can improve through eliminating gerrymandering by using nonpartisan computer algorithms for redistricting, abolishing the electoral college which allows presidents to win with minority support, and reforming immigration policies to expand the selectorate and winning coalition. Beneficial change in developing nations faces enormous challenges from poverty, resource curses, and entrenched autocracies. Democratization opportunities exist in tourist-dependent economies like Kenya, Fiji, and a potential independent Palestine. Mobile technology and internet access can transform lives in developing nations while making it harder for dictators to control communication without damaging their economy. Foreign aid could promote freedom by funding nationwide wireless internet and mobile phone access, creating a win-win situation that improves commerce while enabling citizens to organize. Elections alone don't guarantee meaningful change. Leaders at risk often hold fraudulent elections to create an illusion of fairness while actually strengthening their control. True elections must follow expanded freedom rather than precede it. Despite seemingly insurmountable global problems, the solution to poverty and oppression is clear: freedom. People with rights to speak, write, and gather to share ideas typically enjoy personal and property security along with contentment. Politics follows natural laws that cannot be altered, but we can find better paths within these fundamental rules.
