I recall how my grandfather used our Liverpool-Everton rivalry as a way to lift my spirits when I was hospitalized as a child, and how I later snuck in to banter with my dying grandfather about our rival teams. This football discourse served a deeper purpose-providing a common framework for developing thinking and communication across generations. This love of discussion through football parallels my journey to becoming a mathematician-driven less by fascination with numbers than by a desire to communicate about the world. Football helps communicate mathematics, while mathematics illuminates every aspect of football from gambling to strategy, from synchronized attacks to team geometry.
