Honor for them means fair trading, and their only real class is mercantile, with the elite distinguished merely by wealth. This critique extends beyond Americans to what Hel sees as the fundamental problem of modern civilization-the triumph of commerce over culture. He respects farmers, artisans, artists, warriors, scholars and priests, but feels only disdain for merchants who "collect power and wealth out of proportion to discrimination" and are responsible for "kitsch" and "consumption without use."
