Following tradition, my father whispered these very words into my ear at birth-the first sounds I ever heard. We are Qureshi, descendants of Muhammad's tribe, with a lineage tracing back to Hazrat Umar, one of Islam's four khalifas. My father left Pakistan in the 1970s to join the U.S. Navy, sacrificing proximity to his homeland to provide for his parents and siblings. My mother, daughter of a Muslim missionary, was raised to prioritize faith and family above all else. Though she graduated top of her class and was offered a medical school scholarship, she declined to care for her siblings instead.
My grandmother, Nani Ammi, embodied selfless devotion to Islam-born to a missionary in Uganda, becoming a missionary's wife, and serving her religious community throughout her life. She was my mother's greatest role model and a powerful influence in my early spiritual formation.
As a Navy family, we moved frequently, making it difficult to form lasting friendships. This isolation strengthened our family bonds and deepened my religious identity. My parents created a protective bubble around us, teaching us to see ourselves as ambassadors of Islam in a foreign land. "You will always be seen as a Muslim first," my mother explained. "Your behavior reflects not just on you, but on our entire faith."
This sense of religious responsibility was reinforced through daily rituals. I learned to recite the Quran in Arabic before I could even understand its meaning, completing my first full recitation before turning six. We performed the five daily prayers (salaat) together as a family, with my father's melodic voice leading us through the prescribed movements and recitations. These practices weren't mere habits-they formed the foundation of my identity and worldview.

This cultural divide extended to fundamental approaches to belief. In Islamic culture, honor and shame drive behavior more than individual moral reasoning. What matters is meeting social expectations rather than following personal conscience. I saw this principle at work when friends thought nothing of stealing soda at restaurants until they faced public shame, or when my cousin turned insurance fraud into a humorous story when caught. In my culture, doing the right thing often didn't enter the equation-shame, not guilt, was the determining factor.
Muslims often conflate cultural identity with religious belief, making it difficult to separate Western culture from Christianity. When I pointed out that provocatively dressed people on TV might not be practicing Christians, my parents couldn't comprehend this distinction, responding, "Don't they call themselves 'Christian'? Don't you see them wearing crosses?" They categorized religion by cultural identity rather than belief.
The September 11 attacks intensified these tensions dramatically. Three weeks into my first semester at Old Dominion University, my father called with urgent instructions to find my sister and come home immediately. "They're blaming Muslims! People will be emotional, and they could take it out on you or Baji." For days, we remained home, venturing out only to buy American flags to display prominently on our cars and home. This wasn't paranoia-during Operation Desert Storm, my grandmother had been refused service for wearing a burqa, and shortly after 9/11, our local mosque was vandalized.
As it became clear the hijackers were Muslim, I struggled to reconcile my peaceful understanding of Islam with the terrorism committed in its name. I needed to discover the truth, but challenging childhood beliefs through self-investigation wouldn't be enough. I needed someone who would challenge my biases-an intelligent, uncompromising non-Muslim friend willing to engage me about what mattered most.

That friend appeared in the form of David Wood, whom I met at a forensics tournament shortly after 9/11. We quickly formed a brotherly bond despite being physical opposites-both tall, but I was dark-skinned and slender while he was light-skinned and muscular. I was meticulous about appearance; he preferred casual clothes. I had a pampered childhood; he came from trailer parks.
The starkest contrast emerged later: David was a committed Christian who had spent five years studying the Bible. Yet he didn't bombard me with his beliefs. Our discussions arose naturally through friendship and shared experiences.
During our first trip together, I was shocked to see David reading a Bible in his free time. I immediately challenged him about the Bible's corruption, pointing to its many versions as evidence. "If I want to know exactly what God said, how am I supposed to know which Bible to go to?"

This "swoon theory," though not the original Islamic explanation, had become popular among Muslim debaters.

Gary explained the brutal reality: the flagrum would tear skin off in ribbons, exposing arteries and sometimes causing intestines to spill out. After flogging, victims were nailed through the median nerve, causing extreme pain and incapacitating the hands. A seven-inch nail driven through both feet would force victims to push up against it just to exhale, eventually dying of asphyxiation when they lacked strength to continue. Guards ensured death by breaking legs, crushing heads, or piercing the heart.
When I asked if any scholars supported our position, Gary explained that virtually all scholars-Christian and non-Christian alike-considered Jesus' death by crucifixion among the surest facts of history. The evidence was overwhelming: the Christian claim aligned with the evidence completely.
Later, I attended a debate between Mike and Shabir Ally, a respected Muslim scholar. Mike presented three historically grounded facts accepted by scholars: Jesus' death by crucifixion (accepted by virtually 100% of scholars), the empty tomb (acknowledged by 75% of scholars), and multiple testimonies to Jesus' resurrection from both followers and former enemies. Shabir argued Jesus hadn't actually died on the cross-the traditional Ahmadi position-but I noticed he had to deny clear gospel statements and apply inconsistent standards of skepticism.
After the debate, I reluctantly admitted to Mike that while Shabir was more persuasive in presentation, Mike's arguments were stronger by a ratio of 65 to 35. Though I wasn't ready to convert, I acknowledged the resurrection argument was Christianity's strongest point against Islam.

My next line of defense was to argue that even if Jesus was resurrected, that didn't make him divine. I devoured McDowell's book in hours, checking all biblical references-my first time actually opening a Bible despite having memorized dozens of verses to refute Christianity. While I found many of McDowell's arguments insufficient and easily countered with Islamic explanations, some passages from John's gospel painted Jesus in an undeniably divine light.
I dismissed John's gospel as unreliable, telling David it was written too late and differed dramatically from the Synoptic gospels. Feeling victorious in our debate, I accepted David's challenge to read McDowell's more substantial work, "The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict."
To my shock, McDowell pointed to Mark 14:62, where Jesus calls himself "the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power." This combined references to Daniel 7:13 and Psalm 110:1-passages describing a divine figure sharing God's sovereignty and throne. Despite my imam's teaching that "Son of Man" proved Jesus' humanity, Daniel's prophecy actually depicted a divine figure worshipped eternally by all nations.
The evidence was overwhelming: Jesus' deity wasn't just in John but woven throughout all gospels. Unable to reconcile this with my Islamic beliefs yet unwilling to deny the evidence, I subconsciously channeled my inner tension into increased Islamic devotion-more fervent prayers, deeper hadith study, and greater use of Islamic terminology in daily conversation.

The Crumbling Foundation: Examining Islamic History
With my Christian objections failing to withstand scrutiny, I turned to strengthening my Islamic faith. I prepared a presentation on Muhammad's prophethood for Mike's "Dream Team" apologetics group, emphasizing Muhammad as a man of peace and highlighting the Quran's miraculous scientific knowledge.
After speaking for forty-five minutes, I felt confident I'd represented Islam well-until the questions began. Mike asked how I knew Muhammad only fought defensive battles when the Quran contained seemingly violent verses. When I explained these verses had specific historical contexts known through hadith, Mike asked the devastating question: "How do you know those hadith are trustworthy?" I admitted they were collected 200-250 years after Muhammad's death, which visibly changed the room's atmosphere.
This experience convinced me to study Muhammad more critically. Unlike Christians who learn about Jesus directly from the Bible, Muslims receive most information about Muhammad orally rather than from primary sources, as the Quran itself contains minimal biographical details. What shocked me was discovering that even the earliest records of Muhammad's life openly admit to intentional alterations. As I began reading hadith directly from the source, I quickly discovered the Muhammad I had always known was a filtered version. In the very first volume of Sahih Bukhari, I found disturbing details about Muhammad's first revelation-the angel "caught me forcefully and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it anymore." Even more shocking, another hadith revealed Muhammad became so depressed after these encounters that he contemplated suicide multiple times.
Continuing through Bukhari, I found familiar peaceful teachings but was stunned to discover hadith where Muhammad states "I have been ordered by Allah to fight against people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah." This contradicted the Quran's "no compulsion in religion" verse I'd always been taught.
I discovered more disturbing accounts-Muhammad ordering the assassination of a nursing mother, beheading over 500 Jewish men and boys after the Battle of the Trench, and selling women and children into slavery. These violent stories contradicted everything I knew about the merciful, peaceful prophet I had been raised to revere.

The Final Pillar: Testing the Quran
Having lost confidence in the historical Muhammad, I turned to the Quran as my last hope for salvaging my Islamic faith. The Quran represented for Muslims what Jesus himself represents for Christians-the closest thing to an incarnation of Allah and the very proof of Islam's truth.
Muslims typically defend the Quran's divine origin through five main arguments: its inimitability (literary excellence), fulfilled prophecies, mathematical patterns, scientific truths, and perfect textual preservation. My confidence was shaken when I discovered Al-Furqan al-Haqq, a Christian book written in Quranic style that effectively answered the Quran's challenge that no one could produce anything like it.
When examining the other arguments, I quickly dismissed the prophecies (too vague) and mathematical patterns (easily found in other texts). This left me clinging to the scientific miracles and perfect preservation arguments.
Maurice Bucaille's approach claiming the Quran contained miraculous scientific knowledge became a cornerstone of Muslim outreach and permeated my upbringing. When I finally examined these claims as a medical student, I found serious problems. For instance, the Quran's description of embryonic development describes bones forming first and then being "clothed with flesh"-contradicting modern embryology where mesoderm differentiates into bone and flesh simultaneously.
Most Muslims believe the Quran has remained absolutely unchanged since Muhammad received it. However, when I examined Sahih Bukhari's volume on the Quran, I discovered troubling facts about its collection. Muhammad only dictated the Quran orally, never writing it down himself. He sometimes relayed the same verses differently to different Muslims, leading to heated arguments even during his lifetime.
After Muhammad's death, many verses were lost in battle as knowledgeable Muslims died. Abu Bakr ordered Zaid ibn Thabit to collect the Quran from memories and fragments, sometimes with only a single witness for certain verses. Later, Uthman standardized the text and ordered all other Quranic materials burned. The doctrine of perfect preservation, rather than defending the faith, needed to be defended by faith itself.

The Breaking Point: When Truth Demands a Choice
After three years of intellectual wrestling with David, I finally gave up-not on Islam yet, but on reason itself. I had lived my whole life with vibrant confidence, with my Islamic beliefs, family, words, and actions all converging into one authentic self. Now I was just a shell-outwardly steadfast in Islam while inwardly drowning in confusion.
In a final, desperate attempt to preserve my Islamic faith, I denied my ability to arrive at objective truth. "There's no way I can accept the Christian message," I told David. "The Christian God demands I proclaim Jesus is Lord, but I wasn't there to know if he claimed to be God. I'm Muslim; I've always seen the world as a Muslim. My perception is colored in such a way that even if Jesus were God, I probably wouldn't be able to know it."
The cost for a Muslim to accept the gospel is tremendous. Following Jesus meant immediate ostracism from my community, sacrificing lifelong friendships and social connections. It could mean rejection by parents, siblings, spouse, and children. What I didn't realize was that these costs aren't consciously calculated-they form part of the knee-jerk reaction against the gospel.
I lay prostrate in a Muslim prayer hall, broken before God. "Please, God Almighty, tell me who You are! I beseech You and only You. Only You can rescue me. At Your feet, I lay down everything I've learned, and I give my entire life to You. Take away what You will-my joy, friends, family, even my life-but let me have You. Light the path I must walk. I don't care how many hurdles, pits, or thorns lie ahead. Guide me on the right path. If it's Islam, show me how it's true! If it's Christianity, give me eyes to see!"

Divine Intervention: Dreams, Visions, and Revelation
On December 19, 2004, while staying in a hotel room with my father in Orlando, I crept to the edge of my bed after he fell asleep and tearfully pleaded with God to reveal Himself. At that instant, the room went pitch dark. Where there had been a wall, I saw a field with hundreds of glowing crosses against the darkness. My body was paralyzed, time stood still. Just as quickly as it came, the vision vanished.
In stunned silence, I looked up and said, "God, that doesn't count!" Part of me wondered if God had finally answered my prayers, while another part feared this could be Satan's deception. Looking at my sleeping father, I concluded, "No, I can't give him up based just on this. God will understand. I need more." I returned to prayer: "God, please give me a dream, and if it confirms the vision, I will become Christian."
That night, I received a vivid dream featuring a poisonous snake watching from a stone pillar, a massive iguana disguised as a hill, a giant boy who recognized the iguana's deception, and a cricket that fought and defeated the iguana when it tried to attack me. All morning, I obsessively interpreted the symbols: the snake represented evil or original sin, the iguana was Islam deceiving people, the boy was David exposing the truth, and the cricket was Christianity saving me.
Remarkably, when I consulted both Christian sources and Ibn Sirin's Muslim dream interpretation book, every symbol aligned with my initial understanding-the snake on a stone pillar meant questioning one's religion, the lizard represented a "cruel, hidden enemy unable to provide proof," the boy was "a friend bearing good news," and the cricket was "a warrior bringing joy."
On April 24, 2005, I received my third dream. I sat on the first step of white stairs in a mosque, facing away from the top. The imam sat on the floor behind and below me, wearing white. Though I tried to move off the stairs to sit behind him out of respect, an unseen force held me in place. The meaning seemed clear-I was on stairs leading out of the mosque. The Muslims I respected were now behind and below me, and though I wanted to show respect, I couldn't take my place with them anymore.

Embracing the Cross: Finding Jesus and Losing Everything
Through summer 2005, I desperately resisted the gospel, traveling to mosques across Europe with my father, seeking answers but finding none. I begged God for more dreams, but He gave me none-I already had what I needed. The night before starting my second year of medical school, I savored what I knew might be the last loving moments with my family, overwhelmed by guilt about what I was considering.
The next day, unable to compose myself through tears, I drove to my new apartment instead of school, pleading with God for more time to mourn the upcoming loss of my family. Seeking comfort, I grabbed my Quran and study Bible. The Quran offered nothing-just laws from the seventh century depicting a god of conditional concern. But when I opened the Bible to Matthew, I found: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
These words electrified my dead heart. To a man who had seen the world only through Muslim eyes, this was overwhelming. God would bless me for mourning? For hungering after righteousness rather than achieving it? I couldn't put the Bible down, absorbing every word like water for my parched soul.
When I reached Matthew 10:32-33 about acknowledging Jesus before others, my heart sank-acknowledging Him meant destroying my family. As if in conversation with me, Jesus answered through subsequent verses: "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword... Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me." It wasn't Jesus turning me against my parents; if my family stood against God, I had to choose.
On August 24, 2005, at three in the morning, I prayed: "I submit that Jesus Christ is Lord of heaven and earth. He came to this world to die for my sins, proving His lordship by rising from the dead. I am a sinner, and I need Him for redemption. Christ, I accept You into my life."
My family's reaction was devastating-they felt utterly betrayed yet continued to love me. For nearly two years, my mother cried every time we met. They didn't attend my wedding, and when I chose ministry over medicine, they temporarily cut communication. Our relationship remains tumultuous.
Though my first year as a Christian was unimaginably difficult, it was also the most powerful time of my life. The suffering transformed me into a true disciple. I came to understand that following God meant walking boldly by His Spirit of grace and love, with the eternal purpose of proclaiming and glorifying the Father.
All suffering is worth it to follow Jesus-He is that amazing.

My journey from Islam to Christianity reveals something profound about the human search for truth. We often inherit our beliefs from family and culture, accepting them without question because they form the foundation of our identity and community. But when we dare to examine these beliefs critically-to test them against evidence, reason, and our deepest moral intuitions-we may discover that truth lies beyond the boundaries of tradition.
This doesn't mean rejecting our heritage wholesale. My Pakistani Muslim upbringing gave me many precious gifts: a reverence for God, a commitment to prayer, a strong moral compass, and deep family bonds. But it also taught me that truth matters more than comfort, that intellectual integrity demands we follow evidence wherever it leads, and that God honors sincere seekers.
For those caught between worlds-whether religious, cultural, or intellectual-my story offers both challenge and hope. The challenge is to pursue truth courageously, even when it threatens everything familiar and secure. The hope is that on the other side of that painful journey lies a deeper authenticity, a more grounded faith, and a God who rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
In the end, my conversion wasn't about rejecting Islam but embracing Jesus-not about leaving my family but finding my true Father. It was about discovering that God's love transcends our human categories and reaches us wherever we are, even when we're prostrate on a prayer rug, desperately whispering, "Who are You, Lord?"
