Osamu Dazai (nato Shūji Tsushima, 1909–1948), autore di Schoolgirl, è stato uno dei romanzieri giapponesi più influenti e controversi del XX secolo. Pubblicato nel 1939, Schoolgirl è un'opera giovanile di narrativa psicologica che mette in mostra la straordinaria capacità di Dazai di calarsi in diverse prospettive, esplorando al contempo i temi dell'alienazione, dell'identità e del tumulto emotivo dell'adolescenza.

Nato in una ricca famiglia di proprietari terrieri nel nord del Giappone, Dazai studiò letteratura francese all'Università di Tokyo e divenne celebre per il suo stile confessionale "I-novel" (romanzo dell'io) — narrazioni autobiografiche brutalmente oneste che catturavano il disincanto della moderna società giapponese.
