Nata e cresciuta a Tacoma, Washington, Van Pelt si è laureata al Claremont McKenna College in Politica, Filosofia ed Economia prima di trascorrere quasi un decennio nella consulenza.

In seguito si è dedicata alla scrittura creativa intorno ai trent'anni, traendo ispirazione per il suo romanzo da un video su internet di un polpo in fuga e modellando la sua protagonista, Tova, sulla figura della sua defunta nonna svedese.

Il lavoro di Van Pelt le è valso il McLaughlin-Esstman-Stearns First Novel Prize nel 2023 ed è stato selezionato per il Book Club di Jenna Bush nel programma Today. Attualmente vive nella periferia di Chicago e continua a scrivere conciliando la vita familiare.
