Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914–1977) è stata una diarista brasiliana e autrice di successo di Quarto de Despejo: Diário de uma Favelada (Stanza di rottami), un memoriale rivoluzionario sulla vita nelle favelas di San Paolo. Nata a Sacramento, Minas Gerais, de Jesus ebbe solo due anni di istruzione formale, ma sviluppò una passione per la scrittura mentre lavorava come raccoglitrice di carta e cresceva da sola tre figli nella baraccopoli di Canindé.

Le annotazioni del suo diario, scritte su frammenti di carta trovati per strada, esponevano le dure realtà della povertà, della fame e della disuguaglianza razziale. Scoperto dal giornalista Audálio Dantas nel 1958, il diario fu pubblicato nell'agosto 1960 e vendette oltre 10.000 copie nella prima settimana.

Il libro è stato tradotto in tredici lingue, distribuito in 46 paesi ed è diventato un bestseller internazionale in Nord America ed Europa. De Jesus pubblicò diverse opere successive, tra cui Casa de Alvenaria (1961).
