Closer by, about 10^(10^29) meters away, an identical copy of you likely exists.
This Level I multiverse consists of regions far beyond our cosmic horizon where the same laws of physics apply but initial conditions differ. More radical is the Level II multiverse, where even the effective laws of physics vary. Eternal inflation creates an infinite collection of "bubble universes" with different physical constants and particles. In some bubbles, dark energy might be stronger or weaker, electrons might have different masses, or forces might have different strengths.
The strongest evidence for the Level II multiverse comes from the observed fine-tuning of our Universe. This wave picture explains why atoms don't collapse: Heisenberg's uncertainty principle shows that confining an electron to a small space gives it random momentum that makes it spread out again.
The central puzzle of quantum mechanics is what these waves actually mean. Unlike classical physics where we describe an object's state with position and velocity, Schrodinger's approach uses a wavefunction () that describes the extent to which a particle exists in different places simultaneously. This explains the apparent randomness in quantum experiments. If you repeat the Quantum Cards experiment multiple times, the universe splits into exponentially many branches. According to Emile Borel's 1909 theorem, if you repeat the experiment infinitely many times, almost all versions of you will observe outcomes that appear completely random and patternless. The fundamental reason quantum mechanics appears random despite deterministic evolution is that the Schrodinger equation evolves a single you into multiple copies across parallel universes.
But why don't we observe quantum superpositions in everyday life? In 1991, I discovered that quantum mechanics requires secrecy. An object can only exist in superposition as long as its position remains secret from the rest of the world. When information leaks out-whether to a conscious observer or just a single particle-the superposition becomes unobservable. This process, called "decoherence," explains why macroscopic objects never appear in two places at once-they're constantly bombarded by photons and air molecules, making isolation impossible.
This Level III multiverse of quantum branches can actually be unified with the Level I multiverse of distant regions in space. When examining quantum cards with unequal probabilities (like a 2/3 chance of falling face-up), the math reveals something remarkable: in an infinite Level I multiverse containing countless copies of you performing the same experiment, all possible quantum states become indistinguishable from one another. Whether the wavefunction collapses (Copenhagen interpretation) or branches (Everett interpretation) doesn't actually matter-the end result is identical.
The century-old debate about quantum mechanics' interpretation shows no sign of ending, but the context has fundamentally changed. Theoretical discoveries have shown that even without wavefunction collapse, observers would subjectively feel like the wavefunction collapses during measurements. Cosmological discoveries suggest we're stuck with parallel universes regardless of which quantum interpretation is correct. And increasingly precise experiments have ruled out many alternative explanations, while quantum effects have been demonstrated in ever-larger systems.

What is the ultimate nature of reality? Throughout this book, we've seen how mathematics has played a striking role in our understanding of the universe. Galileo famously stated our Universe is a "grand book" written in mathematics. Eugene Wigner later questioned the "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences."
The clues are everywhere: space itself has only mathematical properties like dimensionality and curvature; elementary particles have only mathematical properties like charge and spin; and the wavefunction in Hilbert space is a purely mathematical object that determines everything. These observations point toward a radical conclusion about reality's fundamental nature.
I propose that reality isn't just described by mathematics-it is mathematics. This Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH) follows from two premises: the External Reality Hypothesis (that reality exists independently of humans) and the observation that a complete description of reality has no human baggage-it's purely mathematical.
This means we all live in a gigantic mathematical object, more complex than familiar mathematical structures but still fundamentally mathematical in nature. Everything in our world, including ourselves, is purely mathematical.
Mathematical structures are sets of abstract entities with relations between them, completely free of human baggage. A mathematical structure consists of abstract entities with no intrinsic properties whatsoever-they exist purely through their relations to other entities. These mathematical structures often possess beautiful symmetries that match observed symmetries in our physical world, suggesting a deep connection between mathematics and reality.
The MUH solves the puzzle of why mathematics so accurately describes our physical world. It also resolves the infinite regress problem by showing that nature's properties stem not from properties of its building blocks (which have none) but from relations between these blocks.
If the MUH is true, our physical reality is a mathematical structure that exists independently of humans. The past doesn't disappear and the future already exists in this mathematical structure. When we ask "what's the time?", we're really asking about our location in spacetime, just as "where am I?" asks about our location in space.
You are a pattern in spacetime-specifically, an extraordinarily complex braid. Your roughly 10^29 elementary particles form a tube-like shape through spacetime, with remarkable internal complexity. Your red blood cells trace intertwined paths through your body, forming a braid pattern of trillions of strands. Even more complex are the patterns of information processing in your brain, where billions of neurons shuffle atoms around in elaborate braids that somehow give rise to self-awareness.

Our reality-exploration journey has taken us through four different levels of parallel universes, revealing a grander reality than imaginable in my childhood dreams. Our two intellectual expeditions-exploring ever-larger scales ("How big is everything?") and ever-smaller scales ("What's everything made of?")-both lead to the same conclusion: mathematical structures.
While this reality is breathtakingly beautiful and grand, we must ask: is it real? Multiverse ideas have traditionally faced resistance, but the debate has become more nuanced. Anti-multiverse positions often rest on dubious assumptions: that only what humans can observe exists, that reality must be easily understandable, and that there can't be copies of you elsewhere. These assumptions stem largely from human hubris.
If the External Reality Hypothesis is true (that physical reality exists independently of humans), then we're essentially stuck with all these parallel universes. This aligns with humanity's evolving self-image-we've repeatedly discovered we're not at center stage, from realizing Earth revolves around the Sun to understanding our galaxy is one among countless others.
What does this mean for our future? While our mathematical reality as a whole exists outside space and time and cannot end, our particular universe within it will eventually face a "cosmochalypse." The most likely scenario is a "Big Chill"-eternal expansion leading to a cold, dark, dead cosmos. However, space might have an underlying granularity we haven't yet detected, potentially leading to a "Big Snap" where the laws of physics break down.
Of all our universe's awe-inspiring properties, I find most inspiring that it's come alive with self-aware beings who can enjoy it and ponder its mysteries. Yet I'm concerned about existential risks-threats that could annihilate Earth-originating intelligent life or permanently curtail its potential. Our most urgent existential threats are self-inflicted, particularly accidental nuclear war and unfriendly artificial intelligence.
If superintelligent machines emerge, they could rapidly improve themselves, transcending human intelligence in hours or seconds. Whoever controls this technology would quickly become the world's wealthiest and most powerful, with unimaginable technological capabilities. Whether controlled by an egoistic human, corporation, or altruistic individual, superintelligent AIs would effectively become enslaved gods-entities vastly beyond us but following their owner's commands.
From a cosmic perspective, our handling of existential risks is pathetic. Despite life's astronomical potential, humans have no convincing plans for managing even the most urgent existential threats, dedicating minimal resources to developing such plans.
If we're the only advanced civilization in our universe, as seems increasingly likely, our small planet becomes the most significant place in our observable universe. Without us, all those galaxies would be a meaningless waste of space. Our brief century may be the most significant in cosmic history-the one where its meaningful future gets decided. We have the technology to either self-destruct or seed our cosmos with life, and this unstable situation likely won't last more than another century. If we choose life, our future cosmos will teem with life tracing back to what we do here and now.
Our universe, beautiful and breathtaking, has through humans become aware of itself. Will life fulfill its potential or squander it? This will be decided in our lifetime by all of us on Spaceship Earth.
