When they discover the mysterious packet hidden beneath the napkin, Annemarie genuinely doesn't know its contents-her ignorance becomes her protection. The dogs strain at their leashes, smelling something interesting, but when the soldier unwraps it, he finds only a handkerchief. Disgusted, he lets her continue. Annemarie hurries to the harbor and delivers the basket to Henrik, who looks relieved despite the torn packet. "Because of you, Annemarie, everything is all right," he assures her. Later, Henrik explains how the Jewish refugees were hidden in secret compartments beneath the floorboards of fishing boats. He reveals that Peter is part of the Resistance, bringing refugees to fishermen who transport them to Sweden. Most importantly, he explains that the handkerchief contained a special drug created by scientists to ruin the Nazi dogs' sense of smell when they searched the boats. The handkerchief saved the Rosens and others, as soldiers with dogs had boarded Henrik's boat just twenty minutes after Annemarie left. This sequence completes Annemarie's journey from protected child to active resistance member. Her mission succeeds precisely because of qualities specific to childhood-her ability to project innocence, her genuine ignorance of the packet's contents, and her capacity to draw on fairy tales for courage. When Peace Finally Comes

Two years later, when Annemarie is twelve, the war finally ends. Copenhagen celebrates with churchbells, Danish flags, and people singing in the streets. The jubilation marks not just liberation but vindication of Denmark's moral stance throughout the occupation. Amidst the celebration, Annemarie learns that Peter Nielsen was executed by the Nazis at Ryvangen. This devastating news is followed by another revelation-her parents finally tell her that Lise had also been in the Resistance. Lise wasn't killed in an accident as they'd claimed but was deliberately run down by a military car while fleeing a raided Resistance meeting. This truth explains her father's anger after Lise's death-not anger at Peter or the accident, but at the occupation that took his daughter's life. On this day of celebration, Annemarie retrieves Ellen's Star of David necklace from its hiding place in Lise's yellow dress. Her father promises to fix the broken clasp so Annemarie can wear it until the Rosens return home and she can give it back to Ellen. This gesture symbolizes both remembrance and hope-honoring her sister's sacrifice while looking forward to reunion with her friend. The author's afterword explains that while Annemarie is fictional, she was inspired by stories from her friend Annelise Platt who lived in Copenhagen during the German occupation. Many historical details are accurate: Denmark's surrender in 1940, King Christian X riding unguarded through Copenhagen streets each morning, Danes sinking their own navy in 1943, and the warning to Jews during their New Year celebration. Nearly seven thousand Danish Jews were smuggled to Sweden through the courage of ordinary citizens. The handkerchief containing dried rabbit's blood and cocaine to confuse Nazi dogs' sense of smell was a real historical device used by boat captains. The fictional Peter Nielsen represents young Resistance fighters like the real Kim Malthe-Bruun, whose photograph and final letter to his mother about creating "an ideal of human decency" inspired the author to tell Denmark's story. The novel's conclusion affirms that courage comes in many forms-from dramatic acts of resistance to small gestures of kindness and remembrance. By preserving Ellen's necklace, Annemarie maintains faith in eventual reunion and restoration.
