Creating vivid, memorable characters is the foundation of any damn good novel. Think of characters as the essential building blocks-like lumber to a carpenter. However, fictional characters (homo fictus) differ crucially from real people (homo sapiens) in several important ways.
Fictional characters must be more exceptional than real people-more handsome or ugly, noble or ruthless, with hotter passions and colder anger. They travel more, fight more, love more, and have far more sex than average people. Even boring characters must be extraordinarily boring to be worth including. While real humans are often fickle and unpredictable, fictional characters must remain comprehensible to readers. They're also necessarily simpler, as novelists must select only those traits, thoughts and impressions relevant to the character's motivations and the story's development.
Characters in fiction come in two varieties. "Flat" or "uni-dimensional" characters appear briefly as waiters, doormen, or other walk-ons. They have one dominant trait-greedy, pious, cowardly-and work fine in minor roles but create melodrama if used for major characters. "Rounded" or "three-dimensional" characters have complex motives, conflicting desires, and burning passions. They feel alive with rich histories that preceded the novel's beginning.
To create rounded characters, follow Lajos Egri's approach by developing three dimensions. The physiological dimension includes height, weight, age, sex, race, and health-physical traits that shape development. The sociological dimension covers social class, neighborhood, education, politics, religion, and parental influences. The psychological dimension emerges from the first two, encompassing phobias, complexes, fears, intelligence, talents, and reasoning abilities.
Before writing your first scene, establish a detailed fictional biography for each major character. For example, if creating a detective protagonist, consider breaking stereotypes-perhaps Boyer Mitchell is young, small-boned, intelligent-looking with large dark eyes, well-dressed and thoughtful, unlike the typical grizzled detective. His father was the legendary "Big Jake" Mitchell, creating both a legacy and burden. Boyer's upper-class mother from the Vermont Benningtons fought his career choice, preferring he become a musician or banker. When Big Jake was murdered in 1982, Boyer took over the business despite interrupting his wedding plans.
Every compelling character has a ruling passion-their central motivating force. For Boyer Mitchell, it might be "To Be the Leonardo da Vinci of Private Eyes." This passion stems from his family history, competition with his father, desire to prove his mother wrong, and his need to compensate for physical limitations with mental prowess. A character with a strong ruling passion won't be easily swayed by bribes, threats or hardships.
The protagonist of any dramatic novel must be determined, well-motivated, and willful. Consider classic examples: the old man in Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea who must catch a fish or die trying; Michael Corleone in The Godfather risking everything to save his family; Scrooge passionately defending his miserliness; McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest refusing to be dominated. Every memorable character in literature has a definable, strong ruling passion at their core.

Conflict: The Engine That Drives Your Story
The foundation of dramatic writing rests on conflict-the essential element that brings characters to life and keeps readers engaged. While straightforward narrative can create a visual image of characters, they only truly come alive when forced to make decisions and act under pressure. When characters face obstacles-whether crossing a cold stream or confronting an opponent-their responses reveal who they truly are.
Scenes without conflict, where characters merely agree and engage in pleasant conversation, create flat, dull interactions that bore readers. Conflict occurs when characters' desires collide with resistance, whether from nature, other characters, or themselves. This collision highlights and exposes their true nature. As Dickens demonstrates in the exchange between Scrooge and his nephew, conflict between characters takes the form of insistence versus resistance, with each character's nature revealed through their arguments.
For compelling conflict, the opposing forces must be relatively equal in strength. Just as no one would pay to see Muhammad Ali fight a crippled midget, readers won't invest in stories where the outcome seems predetermined by a severe imbalance of power. Good opposition requires that the antagonist counter each of the protagonist's attempts with equal force and cunning. The antagonist need not be villainous-they may be just as heroic and well-motivated as the protagonist.
Characters must also be bound together in what Frey calls a "crucible"-the container that holds them together as conflicts heat up. Without a crucible, readers will wonder why characters don't just leave the situation. The crucible might be love, marriage, prison, duty, necessity, or any circumstance that forces characters to remain engaged in their struggle. Whether it's McMurphy and Big Nurse bound by the mental hospital, the old man and the fish linked by hook and line, or the Corleones trapped by family duty, characters in a proper crucible cannot achieve resolution except by fighting through to the end.
Inner conflict adds another essential dimension. When a character's will collides with obstacles within themselves-duty versus fear, love versus guilt, ambition versus conscience-you have inner conflict. These internal struggles make characters truly memorable and generate profound reader empathy. Without inner conflict, characters become melodramatic and readers feel only pity rather than connection. To create meaningful inner conflict, impale your character on the horns of a dilemma-where they must have or do something for powerful reasons, yet cannot for equally compelling reasons.
Dramatic conflict should follow a pattern of slowly rising intensity, where characters progress through graduated emotional stages, revealing different facets at each level. Dickens masterfully demonstrates this in the exchange between Scrooge and the Ghost, where conflict builds methodically rather than immediately reaching maximum intensity. The character must change emotionally throughout the scene-Scrooge moves from cool skepticism to falling on his knees crying "Mercy!"

The premise functions as the essential foundation of your novel-it's the love in a marriage, the steel in reinforced concrete, the E=mc2 of novel writing. It represents the reason you're writing, the point you must prove, and the core of your expression. The premise is what gives your story its purpose and direction.
Fiction imposes pattern and meaning upon life's chaos and apparent meaninglessness. As Mary Burchard Orvis notes, readers crave organization and pattern when they turn to fiction. Aristotle described this as "unity of action," where stories should be "complete and whole" with "organic unity." Most usefully, W.T. Price proposed expressing this principle as a "proposition" or syllogism, which Lajos Egri termed a "premise"-the organizing concept that contains all elements necessary for unified storytelling.
A premise functions like the conclusion of an argument-it's what you're trying to prove through your story. Just as an argument for "dogs make better pets than cats" would include supporting points while excluding contradictory evidence, a premise guides what belongs in your story. In fiction, premises are only true within the particular situation of that novel. For instance, "premarital sex leads to disaster" might be proven through characters like Sam and Mary, whose lives unravel after their encounter. Yet your next novel could prove "premarital sex leads to bliss" through different characters.
A workable premise must be specific to your story, not vague or universal. "The truth wills out" would be too generic for a detective novel; instead, something like "passion for status leads to disgrace" captures the specific transformation. Every good premise contains three elements: character, conflict, and conclusion. It succinctly states how a character transforms through crisis.
A clear premise helps you determine what to include and what to omit in your story. Just as a nonfiction book about Truman would include different material depending on whether it focused on his personal life or political career, fiction requires ruthless selectivity based on the premise. In a story proving "love leads to loneliness," scenes that don't contribute to this transformation-like the protagonist visiting his dying mother-must be cut, no matter how well-written. As Aristotle noted, "that which makes no perceptible difference by its presence or absence is no real part of the whole."

Storytelling Fundamentals: Building Your Narrative Architecture
A story is more than just a sequence of events. While a narrative like "Joe goes to the beach with his girlfriend Sally" technically recounts events, it lacks consequence and meaning. A complete definition is: "A story is a narrative of consequential events involving worthy human characters who change as a result of those events." Characters must be humanlike (even if they're seagulls or locomotives) and capable of evoking emotional responses in readers.
In a dramatic story, characters must actively struggle, not merely suffer passively. True reader identification happens only when characters face dilemmas and take action. Story questions-like a mysterious van following Joe, or his plan to propose after knowing someone just two weeks-create interest by making readers want to discover answers.
The best place to start a story is just before its true beginning. Readers need to understand the character's status quo situation-their circumstances before the core conflict begins-to appreciate the impact of events. Examples from classic novels demonstrate this pattern: The Godfather begins with Michael as a law-abiding war hero before Sollozzo's offer; A Christmas Carol shows Scrooge's miserly nature before the ghosts arrive; The Old Man and the Sea begins the evening before the fishing trip that forms the core conflict.
Characters should develop through "a series of probable or necessary stages" as Aristotle noted, growing "from pole to pole" as Egri described. A stepsheet-a detailed plan of story incidents-helps authors control this development. Using A Christmas Carol as an example, the stepsheet shows how Scrooge's character evolves from dismissing the supernatural as "humbug" to being humbled and afraid when confronted by Marley's ghost, demonstrating incremental growth through carefully planned incidents.
A stepsheet keeps events in progressive cause-and-effect order (A-B-C-D-E-F) and charts character development. It serves as a flexible guide rather than a straitjacket-authors can modify it when needed, provided they think through the consequences of any changes to maintain the story's organic unity.

The Climactic Moment: Where Everything Converges
The climax represents the target toward which the entire story builds-the knockout punch, the exclamation point that answers the story's question. As tension rises through complications, characters are tested until the core conflict must be settled.
The climax is where all story elements converge with maximum impact. It's where tension transforms into satisfaction, where the story's question mark becomes an exclamation point. The climax is the precise moment when the core conflict is settled, while the resolution proves the premise. Using the example of "ruthless ambition brings glory and fame," a character like Martin Crenshaw might lie and cheat his way to becoming senator. The premise dictates the outcome-whether Martin wins (proving ambition leads to glory) or self-destructs (proving ambition leads to death).
After the climax, conflicts diminish rather than intensify. Resolving conflict lacks the "insistence and resistance" of rising conflict, functioning as a "winding down" that settles accounts. Secondary conflicts may be resolved before or after the core conflict climax. Sometimes not all strings need to be tied-if too neatly resolved, readers may suspect manipulation.
Each major character has their own fate and premise. In The Godfather, Michael Corleone's premise is "love of family leads to a life of crime," while his brother Sonny's is "hot-bloodedness leads to death." In One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, McMurphy's premise is "challenging absolute authority leads to death," while the Chief's is "acceptance leads to freedom."
A great climax requires five elements: surprises that subvert reader expectations; exploitation of powerful emotions that move readers; poetic justice that vindicates the innocent, punishes the guilty, or rewards the virtuous; revelation of new facets of character that make readers cheer; and wholeness that resolves core conflicts and answers key story questions. A good climax leaves readers feeling the story is finished, whether through transformation (Scrooge), regained power (Corleones), spiritual victory (Chief), or death (Leamas, Humbert Humbert, Emma Bovary).

Narrative Perspective: Choosing Your Storytelling Lens
A character's viewpoint combines their opinions, prejudices, tastes, and attitudes-it's how they interpret the world based on their sociology, physiology, and psychology. Viewpoint also refers to the locus of narrative: where the narrator stands in relation to the characters.
In objective viewpoint, the narrator remains outside the characters, writing as a reporter who observes actions but never reveals thoughts or feelings. This creates mystery but offers the least intimacy with characters, making it rarely used except in specific genres like spy thrillers. Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon is a masterful exception, though difficult to execute well.
First-person narration provides access to one character's thoughts-the narrator, who may be protagonist, antagonist, or minor character. While beginners often feel comfortable with this approach and it can seem more believable, it presents significant challenges: the narrator can't show events they didn't witness, must reveal other characters solely through observable behavior, and risks boring readers with excessive "I" statements.
Omniscient narration reveals thoughts from all characters' minds, creating comprehensive societal portraits. Victorian novelists frequently shifted between multiple viewpoints within a single scene, showing interior states of various characters simultaneously. While powerful for depicting society's workings, this approach prevents readers from establishing deep identification with any character due to constantly shifting perspectives.
Limited omniscient viewpoint modernizes the traditional omniscient approach by restricting access to only certain characters' thoughts-typically the protagonist and two or three others designated as "viewpoint characters." This powerful technique allows readers to experience deep identification with these selected characters without the jarring shifts of pure omniscience.
When selecting viewpoint, ask not "what viewpoint?" but "who can tell this story best?" Many beginners mistakenly shift viewpoints frequently, thinking it demonstrates creativity when it's actually pretentious. Today's standard for most genres is author-invisible, third-person limited omniscient viewpoint. First-person narration allows for commentary and personality that would be considered "author intrusion" in third-person.
Fiction's greatest power is creating reader identification with characters. To weave this spell, immediately give readers an emotional touchstone by plunging characters into emotion-provoking situations. Characters needn't be admirable to create identification-even Humbert Humbert works because he suffers, struggles, and feels human emotions. Identification occurs when readers participate in characters' decision-making, saying "Come on, Harry, run for it!"

Crafting Compelling Dialogue and Sensuous Prose
Direct dialogue-where characters say exactly what they think-creates flat, uninspired exchanges. Indirect dialogue, where characters use subterfuge, wit, or unique approaches, creates memorable interactions. When Joe uses Tarot cards as a clever way to ask Mary to the prom instead of directly asking her out, he becomes more interesting. Your characters can display more wit and cleverness than you possess because you have time to craft their spontaneous-seeming responses, while they appear to generate them instantly.
Novels employ three dramatic modes: dramatic narrative, scenes, and half-scenes. In dramatic narrative, the narrator summarizes actions and character growth. Scenes present actions as they happen, with dialogue and immediate reactions. Half-scenes blend dramatic narrative with scene elements, as shown in the Madame Bovary example where narrative transitions into Charles's marriage proposal scene and back again.
Like a complete story, a dramatic scene has a distinct shape-beginning at a low point of tension, rising to a climax, followed by resolution. The scene's core conflict doesn't need to match the novel's main conflict. Dickens' A Christmas Carol demonstrates this structure perfectly when Scrooge confronts charity collectors, beginning with pleasantries, escalating to his harsh refusal, and ending with his improved self-opinion.
A familiar scene-like a detective investigating a murder-can be transformed from flat to compelling by adding conflict between characters. To improve dialogue, examine each line by asking: Is it in conflict? Is it trite? Can it be said better indirectly? Is it as clever and colorful as possible?
Dynamic prose follows three commandments: be specific, appeal to all senses, and be poetic. Good figures of speech should resonate beyond mere comparison, like Dickens describing Scrooge as "solitary as an oyster" or Nabokov's "aging ape eyes." But writers must avoid cliches, mixed metaphors, and extravagant or confusing comparisons.
Beyond sensory appeal, powerful prose incorporates time into its descriptions, filters scenes through viewpoint characters' perceptions, and maintains dynamic movement rather than static description. A static description like "The red barn stood behind the house" becomes vibrant when rewritten with "shutters banging on rusted hinges" and paint "flaking off in the breeze." Good prose should have temporal depth, color, textural density, motion, and appeal to all seven senses-the traditional five plus psychic sense and humor.

The Rewriting Process: Where Books Become Great
Rewriting is the most challenging part of novel writing-harder than most beginners imagine, "harder than rowing a bathtub across the North Atlantic." The difficulty lies in evaluating your own work objectively. When reading others' writing, flaws leap off the page, but with your own work, you're blind to problems. You automatically care about your characters because they're yours, but readers may not. To successfully complete a novel, you must learn to see what critics see and be willing to change anything-favorite scenes, plot elements, characters-to strengthen the work.
Frey identifies three types of writers' groups: "puff" groups that offer only praise and flattery (which ruins writers by convincing them flawed drafts are masterpieces); "literary" groups that make unhelpful comparisons to established writers; and "destructive" groups-the only truly worthwhile kind-that ruthlessly critique your work. In destructive groups, you'll hear brutal but necessary feedback like "punch it up, your characters are acting like pantywaists." Though initially painful, this criticism forces you to see your work objectively.
If you can't find a "destructive" writers' group, become your own critic and enlist friends. To get honest feedback, tell friends the manuscript was written by someone else. Never defend your work when receiving criticism-just listen. Create evaluation tools like ranking elements of your story (plot, characterization, language) or having readers grade scenes on an interest scale of 1-10. The best analyst is ultimately yourself-try reading your manuscript into a tape recorder and playing it back, or setting it aside for months before reviewing.
When self-analyzing your manuscript, first determine if you've proved your premise-if not, you must rewrite. Check if readers can emotionally identify with your characters. Ensure characters are in opposition, at maximum capacity, well-motivated, and growing from pole to pole. Verify conflicts rise properly and resolve completely. Examine if scenes vary, the story begins at the right place, and events flow logically. The climax should be revolutionary, satisfying, and emotionally powerful.

The Writer's Life: Commitment, Persistence, and Overcoming Obstacles
Unlike dentists who earn credentials through formal education, novelists must be published to gain legitimacy. Being an unpublished novelist carries social stigma-friends snicker, relatives worry, and creditors panic. To avoid this stigma, aspiring novelists often claim to be writing nonfiction, pursue academic credentials as cover, or become "closet novelists" who tell no one. The bolder alternative is the "John Wayne Solution": proudly declare yourself a novelist and dare anyone to mock you.
To succeed as a novelist, talent matters less than self-discipline and determination. Many talented writers never succeed because they lack persistence. Writing requires sacrificing time normally spent with loved ones or on leisure activities. As William C. Knott states, you must "make the kind of commitment that will effectively subordinate almost every effort and interest to the mastering of the craft." The reality of writing isn't glamorous-it's hard, lonely work filled with self-doubt, not the romanticized lifestyle portrayed in biographies.
Writing success comes down to simple mathematics. By eliminating just television time-which averages 20-40 hours weekly for most Americans-you can complete a novel in one year. At just two pages per hour for twenty hours weekly, you can finish character biographies and a stepsheet in a month, a 400-page first draft in ten weeks, second and third drafts in twenty more weeks, with two months left for polishing. The key is regularity-working at the same time each day and saying no to everything that interferes.
Writer's block happens to everyone, but what you do when it strikes separates real writers from wannabes. Don't panic or turn to alcohol or drugs. Instead, get the adrenaline flowing: retype previous work, play energizing music, read aloud what you've written. Most importantly, keep pounding the keyboard even if you're producing nonsense-you'll work through it if you persist, but never if you walk away. Writer's block has four main causes: not knowing your characters well enough (solve by interviewing them), trying to edit while writing (solve by writing with your monitor off), fear of failure (overcome by shouting defiance), and fear of success (solve by using a pseudonym if necessary).
You'll know your novel is finished when you feel nauseated looking at it and further rewrites merely make it different, not better. Have it professionally copy-edited and typed according to standard manuscript format. Next, find an agent-first through writer friends' recommendations, or by sending query letters with a synopsis, sample chapter, and cover letter to agents listed in reference guides.
