As researcher Jane Margolis notes, computing is claimed as male territory very early in life through cultural messaging that discourages female participation at every level-from school computer labs to home computer placement to operating systems with aggressive terminology. By the mid-1990s, while women were establishing their presence on the Web, another battleground emerged: reshaping girls' first impressions of computers through gaming. Brenda Laurel, a self-described "combat epistemologist," founded Purple Moon to make computer games specifically for girls. After interviewing nearly 1,000 children and 500 adults over four years, Brenda concluded that girls didn't play computer games because the games were designed for boys. Girls hated repetitive dying, found violence stressful, and weren't motivated by mastery for its own sake. Instead, they preferred exploration, strong storylines, and collaborative play. Despite initial success, Purple Moon faced criticism for reinforcing stereotypes about popularity and fashion. In 1999, Interval pulled the plug on Purple Moon, selling it to Mattel at a bargain-basement price. In summer 1992, a provocative billboard appeared in Sydney featuring DNA fragments, vaginal imagery, and unicorn-horned women emerging from seashells. Its text proclaimed: "WE ARE THE VIRUS OF A NEW WORLD DISORDER, DISRUPTING THE SYMBOLIC FROM WITHIN. SABOTEURS OF BIG DADDY MAINFRAME. THE CLITORIS IS A DIRECT LINE TO THE MATRIX." The Cyberfeminists had arrived. Cyberfeminism flourished briefly in the mid-1990s as a wild, utopian art movement seeking to subvert the male-dominated technological landscape. These artists, coders, and writers saw the Internet as an unprecedented platform for free expression, a placeless world where a new feminism could thrive. But as the Web commercialized after the dot-com bubble burst, it became clear the Internet wouldn't liberate anyone from sexism or other social divisions. The cyberfeminists didn't fail; rather, as digital and real life merged, the digital world inherited real-world problems. Yet this overlap creates powerful tools for change. When we create technologies, we don't just mirror the world-we make it. And with diverse voices at the table, we can remake it. The first step is seeing our technological history clearly, beyond myths of garages and brogrammers. The second is learning from our forebears like Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, and the women of Resource One. The final step is the hardest: we get to work.
