Forget solo success. Shawn Achor's "Big Potential" reveals how collaboration trumps individual achievement. Harvard researcher's insights have transformed leadership at firms like Harper Grey LLP, proving we're wired to thrive together. What hidden ceiling are you hitting by striving alone?
Shawn Achor, New York Times bestselling author of Big Potential, is a leading expert in positive psychology and human potential. A Harvard-trained researcher and former instructor, Achor’s work bridges science and practical strategies for optimizing teamwork, leadership, and collective success.
His books, including The Happiness Advantage and Before Happiness, explore how mindset shapes achievement, with Big Potential arguing that true excellence stems from fostering strengths in others. Achor’s TED Talk on happiness and productivity has garnered over 25 million views, and his research has been featured in Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and NPR.
He co-founded GoodThink Inc. and has advised organizations like the Pentagon, NFL, and Fortune 100 companies. Achor’s PBS special on positive psychology has reached millions, and his principles are taught in programs at Wharton, Yale, and Columbia.
Big Potential builds on his decade of global research across 51 countries, offering a transformative framework for unlocking group success. The book is widely used in corporate training programs and has been translated into multiple languages.
Big Potential challenges the myth of individual success, arguing that true achievement stems from collaborative ecosystems. Shawn Achor uses neuroscience and psychology research to show how elevating others—through positive peer influence, systemic support, and collective growth—creates a "Virtuous Cycle" that amplifies personal and group success.
Leaders, educators, team managers, and professionals aiming to foster resilience and innovation in groups will benefit. Achor’s strategies are backed by work with Fortune 100 companies, NASA, and the NFL, making it ideal for anyone seeking systemic approaches to productivity and well-being.
Yes. Achor combines actionable frameworks (like the SEEDS model) with data-driven insights to redefine success. The book is praised for blending academic rigor with real-world applications, offering tools to thrive in interconnected environments.
Achor shifts success from solitary achievement to collaborative ecosystems. By helping others excel, we unlock exponential gains—mirroring systems like thriving forests, where interconnectedness drives resilience.
A five-step system for cultivating collective potential:
While The Happiness Advantage focuses on individual mindset shifts, Big Potential scales these principles to groups. It emphasizes systemic change over personal habits, leveraging networks to amplify outcomes.
Achor cites collaborations with NASA, the NBA, and Fortune 100 firms to illustrate systemic success. For instance, positive team dynamics at Microsoft improved innovation, while NBA coaches boosting player morale enhanced overall performance.
Some note the book’s reliance on anecdotal evidence and underemphasis on individual accountability. However, its data-backed frameworks counterbalance these concerns.
Achor advocates intentional community-building in hybrid environments, such as virtual “strength-spotting” exercises to maintain connection and shared purpose across distributed teams.

Have you ever watched fireflies synchronize their light in perfect harmony? In Southeast Asian mangroves, this magical phenomenon increases their mating success from a mere 3% to an astonishing 82%. This natural wonder reveals a truth that challenges everything we've been taught about achievement: true potential isn't reached alone but through powerful connections with others. For centuries, we've celebrated the lone genius, the solitary champion, the individual who rises above all others. From childhood gold stars to workplace promotions, our society rewards those who stand out from the crowd. But what if this approach fundamentally misunderstands how human potential actually works? The mangrove fireflies demonstrate a profound insight-when they flash individually, only 3% succeed. When they synchronize, success skyrockets to 82%. By coordinating rather than competing, they create an ecosystem where everyone thrives. Our education system trains us for 22 years to excel individually, yet our careers depend almost entirely on how well we work with others. As Reid Hoffman observed: "If you're playing a solo game, you'll always lose to a team." The evidence is overwhelming. Google's Project Aristotle reached a startling conclusion: there is no profile of a "perfect performer." What matters most is how team members interact-whether they create psychological safety and allow everyone to contribute equally. William Muir's famous chicken experiment provides a vivid illustration. When breeding only the highest egg-producing chickens together, he expected super-productive chickens. Instead, he got a bloodbath-all but three chickens were pecked to death. Meanwhile, a control group of average chickens thrived and produced 160% more eggs. When individuals focus solely on outcompeting others, they destroy collective potential.
