Designing for Sustainable Engagement

After exploring the eight Core Drives, we must consider how to combine them effectively for sustainable engagement. The Octalysis Framework provides a visual understanding of motivation's complexities and nature. The octagon shape offers visual cues about whether motivational elements have long-term or short-term effects and whether experiences are intrinsically or extrinsically designed. Left Brain Core Drives correlate with Extrinsic Motivation, while Right Brain Core Drives correlate with Intrinsic Motivation. Extrinsic Motivation comes from pursuing a goal, purpose, or reward, making even unpleasant tasks appealing. Intrinsic Motivation comes from enjoying the activity itself-things you'd do without compensation or even pay to do. Most gamification campaigns rely on Left Brain Core Drives (badges, rewards, progress bars) because adding extrinsic rewards is easier than making activities inherently enjoyable. However, this creates motivational traps. Research shows that paying someone to do something they previously enjoyed for free can destroy their intrinsic motivation. When the payment stops or decreases to an insulting amount, they lose interest completely. This "Overjustification Effect" replaces intrinsic joy with extrinsic calculation. Educational systems suffer from the shift from intrinsic to extrinsic motivation. Humans naturally desire to learn (Core Drive 7: Unpredictability & Curiosity), but school transforms this into extrinsic motivation for grades, diplomas, and approval. After exams, students often forget what they've learned because the extrinsic goal has been achieved. Financial rewards not only reduce our intellectual curiosity and creative problem-solving, but they also shift our focus from social thinking to economic thinking. Dan Ariely defines this contrast as "Social Norms versus Market Norms." People willingly perform tasks for free under social norms ("I'll do you a favor because we appreciate each other"), but once money is offered, the brain shifts to market norms ("Are you paying me my worth?"). Despite its drawbacks, extrinsic motivation has important advantages. It generates initial interest and provides compelling reasons to try an experience. Promoting "You'll get a $100 gift card if you sign up" is often more immediately appealing than promising intrinsic benefits. To make users more intrinsically motivated, implement the Right Brain Core Drives into the experience: 1. Making the experience more social: Don't ask users to invite friends during onboarding before they've experienced value. Wait until after their "First Major Win-State"-the moment when they first say "Wow! This is awesome!" 2. Adding unpredictability: Build controlled randomness into the experience so results aren't always predictable. Consider variable rewards like Mystery Boxes (expected rewards with unknown contents) or Easter Eggs (unexpected rewards). 3. Adding meaningful choices and feedback: Design experiences where users can make meaningful choices that express their creativity, preferences and strategy. If all users take identical paths to achieve the goal, there are no meaningful choices. The ideal approach combines both motivational types strategically: establish a White Hat environment where users feel powerful and comfortable, then implement Black Hat techniques at key conversion moments, before quickly transitioning back to White Hat to restore positive feelings. Businesses should create an initial White Hat environment to generate interest, use Black Hat techniques for conversion, then revert to White Hat to eliminate buyer's remorse. TOMS Shoes exemplifies this by reassuring customers who might regret an expensive purchase with information about how their purchase provided shoes to a child in need. While gamification is technically manipulation, many accepted social interactions like saying "please" and "thank you" are also forms of manipulation that we embrace. The author proposes an ethical litmus test: gamification is ethical when (1) there's full transparency about its purpose and (2) users implicitly or explicitly opt-in to the system. By understanding and thoughtfully implementing the eight Core Drives of human motivation, we can create experiences that not only achieve business objectives but also genuinely improve people's lives-making what they have to do align with what they want to do, and ultimately transforming work, learning, and personal growth into engaging, meaningful journeys.
