John Bordley Rawls (1921–2002), autore di Una teoria della giustizia, è stato un rivoluzionario filosofo politico americano la cui opera ha ridefinito l'etica e la teoria politica del XX secolo. Professore all'Università di Harvard per oltre tre decenni, Rawls si specializzò in filosofia morale e liberalismo egualitario, affrontando con il suo schema della "giustizia come equità" i temi dell'uguaglianza, della giustizia distributiva e della struttura sociale.
