Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis whose writing focused on the unconscious, dreams, sexuality, and the structure of the mind. His notable works include The Interpretation of Dreams and Civilization and Its Discontents. His ideas profoundly shaped twentieth-century psychology, psychiatry, and literary and cultural criticism.
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire, and spent most of his formative years in Vienna after his family relocated there. Raised in a Jewish household of modest means but high intellectual ambition, he showed early academic promise and entered the University of Vienna to study medicine. His training began in neurology and physiology rather than in psychology as it is now defined, and he worked in the laboratory of Ernst Brücke before turning toward clinical practice. A decisive turning point came in the 1880s, when his study of nervous disorders, his time in Paris observing Jean-Martin Charcot, and his collaboration with Josef Breuer led him away from strictly biological explanation and toward the investigation of hidden mental life.
