Michio Kaku is an American theoretical physicist, author, and prominent science communicator known for his work on string field theory and efforts to popularize physics. His books, including “Physics of the Impossible,” “Physics of the Future,” and “The God Equation,” are international best sellers. Kaku’s public outreach has earned major awards and made science more accessible worldwide.
Michio Kaku was born in San Jose, California in 1947 to Japanese-American parents, whose experiences during World War II, including internment at Tule Lake, deeply colored the family’s background. Displaying an early fascination with science, Kaku constructed a homemade particle accelerator while in high school, seeking to produce antimatter. His ingenuity drew the attention of prominent physicist Edward Teller at the National Science Fair, earning Kaku the prestigious Hertz Engineering Scholarship and facilitating his entrance to Harvard University. He graduated summa cum laude and first in his physics class in 1968, then completed his Ph.D. in physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972.
