John Scalzi, born on May 10, 1969, in Fairfield, California, grew up largely in Southern California, attended the Webb Schools, and studied philosophy at the University of Chicago. Before fiction made him widely known, he had already built a professional writing life, freelancing for the Chicago Sun-Times and New City and then starting full-time at the Fresno Bee in September 1991.
