J. Craig Venter

Nato: October 14, 1946 – Salt Lake City, Utah, United States

J. Craig Venter is an American biotechnologist and genomics pioneer whose writing focuses on genetics, synthetic biology, and the future of life sciences. His notable books include A Life Decoded and Life at the Speed of Light. He helped lead the first draft human genome sequencing effort and founded multiple influential genomics institutes and companies.

Biografia e Percorso dell'Autore

J. Craig Venter, born in Salt Lake City in 1946 and raised largely in the San Francisco area, came to science by an indirect route. After high school he served as a U.S. Navy corpsman in Vietnam, and only afterward began the formal academic path that led him to the University of California, San Diego, where he earned degrees in biochemistry and in physiology and pharmacology. He then joined the faculty at SUNY Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. That combination of wartime medical exposure, late-starting academic focus, and laboratory training helped shape the restless, applied style that would define his career.
