Explore the shift from chatbots to agentic AI. Learn how AI agents move beyond prompts to goal execution, autonomous navigation, and new digital standards.

We’re moving from 'prompt and response' to 'goal and execution.' It’s the difference between a parrot repeating words and a navigator actually steering the ship.
Learning about ai agent

While traditional chatbots focus on a prompt-and-response model, AI agents represent a shift toward goal and execution. Instead of just generating text like a poem, these digital assistants act as navigators with the ability to perform multi-step tasks across different tools. They function like systems with hands, deciding which steps to take independently until a specific objective, such as booking a complex trip, is fully completed.
The term agentic refers to AI systems that can pursue goals autonomously rather than just repeating words. This concept involves the AI steering the ship by making its own decisions on which tools to use and determining when a job is finished. Although researchers have studied this since the 1990s, the idea of agentic execution only exploded into the mainstream around 2024, marking a transition from static chat boxes to active digital assistants.
By May 2026, AI agents have moved beyond simple experimentation and are now integrated into various sectors including coding and customer service. These autonomous agents are designed to handle complex workflows that previously required humans to jump between multiple digital tabs. As they become more common, organizations like NIST are working to establish essential standards to ensure these intelligent systems can communicate with each other safely and effectively.
