    “

Success isn’t a solo mountain climb; it’s about building a web of real, trusted friends before you actually need them. Relationships are like muscles—the more you use them by being generous and helping others reach their goals, the stronger and more resilient they become.

    Foire aux questions

Networking is significantly more effective because the vast majority of jobs are never filled through random job boards. While about half of all jobs were found through personal contacts in the mid-2000s, that number is estimated to be over 80 percent today. Building a foundation of meaningful relationships provides a level of career security that talent or hard work alone cannot offer, especially when the economy is unstable.

While many people view favors as a finite resource that gets "used up," relationships actually function like muscles—the more you exercise them, the stronger they become. Asking for help demonstrates that you value the other person's expertise and trust their judgment. As long as the relationship is reciprocal and built on a foundation of generosity rather than being "leech-like," these interactions make the connection more resilient.

Super-connectors are individuals who maintain thousands of contacts across many different industries and walks of life, such as headhunters, journalists, or local business owners. Because of their vast reach, a huge percentage of social connections often pass through just a few of these individuals. By providing value to a super-connector, you can expand your own professional reach exponentially.

The "Blue Flame" represents the sweet spot where your individual passion and talent meet. Once you identify this, you can create a Networking Action Plan (NAP) that sets concrete goals for three years, one year, and three months. This plan turns networking from an abstract concept into a logical to-do list by identifying the specific gatekeepers, mentors, and peers who can help you reach those milestones.

The key is to move away from formal, "oily" business card exchanges and focus on "relationship glue," which involves sharing authentic experiences outside of the office. By engaging in shared passions—like a meal, a run, or a hobby—the conversation flows naturally and skips painful small talk. Being vulnerable and finding ways to be helpful in personal areas like "health, wealth, and children" creates a deep bond that feels caring rather than transactional.
